Grade 6 All levels with be working on a standard 6th grade text book. The curriculum covered follows the US Common Core Standards for Mathematics.
Grade 7 Regular will be working in a standard 7th grade text book. The curriculum covered follows the US Common Core Standards in Mathematics.
Grade 7 Accelerated class will be working in an accelerated level text for that grade level. The curriculum covered follows the US Common Core Standards for Mathematics.
Grade 8 Regular class will be working in a traditional 8th grade text book. The topics covered are part of the US Common Core Standards for Mathematics.
Grade 8 Accelerated class will be working in a 9th grade level Algebra I book. The topics covered are standard for Algebra I students and follow the US Common Core Standards for Mathematics.
Math groups:
Every grade will be separated into one accelerated group and one regular group. Both groups will cover all the curriculum necessary at that grade level, but the accelerated group will work at a faster pace allowing them to be ready for Accelerated Algebra in 8th and the regular 8th grade will also be on an Algebra track by that time.
Movement from group to group is always an option to meet the needs of our students. This option can apply anytime throughout the school year. If a student is moving up, they may need to spend additional time with some extra instruction to meet the needs of the accelerated class.
The purpose of grouping at this level is to offer our students maximum success in the math program. It is important as the math work gets more challenging for students to work at an appropriate pace for their maximum growth. This way the regular class will get the time and detailed instruction they need, while the accelerated class will be mastering concepts at a faster rate to accommodate their skills.
All math levels will complete the common core standards required at their particular grade level.
There are high expectations for all regular and accelerated level classes to complete all the curriculum of that grade level to best prepare for the next one and be ready for high school.
8th grade accelerated
The 8th grade accelerated math group will follow the curriculum outlined by Lyons Township high school for the 9th grade Algebra Accel class. We will use the same Algebra I textbook, published by McDougal Littell, and follow the same time line for completion of topics throughout the year. The material covered is aligned with the Common Core Standards for Algebra I. It includes Balancing equations and inequalities, linear functions, solving systems of equations, identifying, operating with and factoring polynomials, graphing and solving quadratics, simplifying and operating with radicals, and data and statistics including frequencies, measures of central tendency and histograms. This course also aligns with other Algebra I curriculums in the local area at private schools.
8th grade regular
The 8th grade regular math group will work with the Go Math series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It follows the Common Core Standards for 8th grade and is rigorous in its treatment of Algebra for the 8th grade. We will study rational and irrational numbers, exponents and scientific notation, proportional and non-proportional relationships, writing linear equations, functions, solving linear equations, angle relationships, Pythagorean Theorem, volume, transformations and some data and statistics. The students cover may of the same topics as the accelerated group, but pace and instruction is more suited to the learning needs at this level.
7th grade accelerated
The 7th grade accelerated class will work with the Go Math series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as well as the Simple Solutions series to keep basic skills up to date. Simple Solutions are worked on independently by students with 2 lessons per week covered. Every four lessons we take a quiz on those skills. The purpose of this curriculum is to keep current with basic skills for standardized tests and future work. The daily math work from the Go Math series is aligned with the Common Core standards for 7th grade. This curriculum includes standards from both 7th and 8th grades to bridge the gap to the 9th grade Algebra next year. Topics include operations with rational numbers, ratios and proportions, per cents, expressions, balancing equations and inequalities, modeling geometric figures, circumference, area and volume, probability, irrational numbers, scientific notation, proportional relationships, angle relationships, and transformations.
7th grade regular
The 7th grade regular math class will work with the Go Math series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Simple Solutions series to keep basic skills up to date. As the other level class, this group will cover two simple solutions lessons per week worked on independently by students with a quiz taken every four lessons. The regular daily math work from the Go Math series is aligned with the Common Core Standards for 7th grade. It includes topics such as: operations with integers and rational numbers, rates and proportionality, per cents, modeling geometric figures, circumference, area and volume, probability, and some data and statistics. The same common core standards are covered in both levels of 7th grade with instruction and pace suited to student learning capacity.
6th grade accelerated
The 6th grade accelerated math class will work with the Go Math series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Simple Solutions series to keep basic skills up to date. The class will cover two simple solutions lessons per week with students working independently on these and taking a quiz every four lessons. The regular daily math work from the Go Math series is aligned with the Common Core standards for 6th grade. It includes topics such as: integers, factors and multiples, rational numbers, operations with fractions and decimals, representing ratios and rates, applying ratios and rates, per cents, generating equivalent numerical expressions, and algebraic expressions, area and polygons, coordinate plane and relationships in two variables, and writing equations.
6th grade regular
The 6th grade regular math class will work with the Go Math series published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Simple Solutions series to keep basic skills up to date. The class will cover two simple solutions lessons each week and students work independently on these taking a quiz every four lessons. The regular daily math work from the Go Math series is aligned with the Common Core Standards for 6th grade. It includes topics such as: integers, factors and multiples, rational numbers, operations with fractions and decimals, representing ratios and rates, applying ratios and rates, per cents, area and polygons, and the coordinate plane.
