Week of December 10-14

What a wonderful week in first grade! This week we read the story Far From Home and students worked on Chinese customs. Students compared Bryan’s new school to his previous school, as well as to Saint Cletus. We wrapped up Chapter 5 in math and students are showing growth in their addition and subtraction skills.

Looking ahead to next week we will be learning…

We will not have spelling this coming week due to Christmas break!

This week in reading we will be looking at how other countries celebrate Christmas and their holiday traditions. Be sure to ask your first grader what they learned about the country of the day!

In writing we will write about the countries we are learning about and how their traditions are both similar and different than ours.

We will be reviewing both addition and subtraction strategies through a variety of centers and hands on activities. This will allow for continued strengthening of these important skills, which will be beneficial in our next chapters.

Social Studies

We will be studying countries around the world. Students will locate the countries we visit on a map, as well as learn about their traditions. Students will create a keepsake from each country.

This week we will discuss the birth of Jesus and what it means for us today. We will also discuss Advent and what each week represents.
