Terrific Third Grade 2-15-2019

Valentine’s Day:   A big thank you to all parents who were involved in providing a great party, by planning and organizing, donating something for the party, or coming to help run the party.  Enjoy a few Valentine Day photos!

Religion:  This week our third graders will be preparing for the School Mass that they will be hosting on Wednesday, February 27th.  Please check and see if your schedule permits you to come and pray with us. We will also be learning about what prayer is and how Jesus taught us to pray in chapter 10.The monthly school prayer will be said on February 28th.  FYI rooms 111 & 112 will be leading the Stations of the Cross on March 21 in the afternoon. You are welcomed to attend this lovely Lenten prayer tradition.

Phonics: Students will begin a new phonics unit of prefixes, base words, suffixes and syllables.  They will start learning a variety of prefixes (dis, un, mis, im, in, re, de, ex, pre,)  what they mean, and how to form words using them..

Spelling: The weekly spelling unit, # 23  consists of single syllable homophones.   The unit words are:  way, its, owe, sell, great, sail, great, sail, cell, scent, oh, cent, it’s, grate, weigh, sale, and sent.  Students will  sort words by homophone pairs and use the correct homophone in sentences,  identify different long a spellings,  categorize words, and proofread a paragraph.  Students will take unit  23 spelling tests on Friday, February 22nd.

Reading: We are reading a historical fiction novel, The Year of Miss Agnes. Students will focus on a character’s traits, actions, and how they contribute to the story’s sequence. We are also continuing with Reading Quizlets in which students compare and contrast two different reading selections, use graphics for understanding, determine correct meanings for vocabulary, and locate the main idea and supporting details.  Students should be reading a mystery book for the March “cereal box” book report which is due 3/13/19. The Great America Reading Challenge is due date has  been extended until Wednesday, February 20th so students have a few more days to complete their forms and return them to school in order to receive a free pass to Great America.

Poems: The February poems will be recited on February 22nd.

Grammar: The weekly Simple Solutions Grammar Quiz will be on Friday, February 22nd. The skills covered in the quiz include: using a coma and quotation marks to identify dialogue within a sentence,  changing present tense verbs to past tense, forming a singular possessive noun, finding action verbs in a sentence, connecting two simple sentences to make a compound sentence, forming a word with the prefix re, determining the meaning of a given word using context clues, identifying an adjective, and knowing the meaning of a word with the suffix “ful.”

Math:   Students are practicing new division strategies and memorizing the division facts in chapter seven. There will  be a Simple Solutions Quiz on Friday, February 22nd.

Science: In science this week students will learn about structural and behavioral adaptations of animals which help them survive.   Students will also participate in another fun STEAM activity.

Science Field Trip: On March 21st  we are going to The Children’s Farm in Palos Park for a  wonderful experience  planned just for third graders. This is organized and sponsored by the Cook Country Farm Bureau. The field trip permission forms and fees are due February 22nd. Thank you to the several families that have already turned in their forms and fees.

Social Studies: For President’s Day, each student is researching and assembling a mobile  about a president.  This fun learning project is  due Tuesday, February 26th.  The green note- taking page is also to be returned on  2/26. A wonderful website for students to use is
