The chapter 9 test will be next week.

Phonics: Students will read and use words with vowel pairs (ee, ie, oe, ai, ay, ue, oa ea,)  digraphs ( oo, ei, ea, aw, au), and dipthongs (oy, oi, ou, ow, ew.) They will also relate the number of vowel sounds heard in a word to the number of syllables in the word. The Unit 5 test will be early next week.

Spelling: The weekly spelling unit, # 21  focuses on more “r controlled vowels”, ur, or, ear, and ir.  The assessed words will be: word, fur, early, circus, turn, skirt, earth, work, curl, learn, hurt, dirt, earn, shirt, and heard.  Students will analyze the sound spellings, use sound and letter patterns, categorize words, use context clues,  understand the meanings of words, and proofread a poster.  Students will take unit  21 spelling tests on Friday, February 8th.

Reading:  Any student who  did not have the opportunity to share their cube book report with the class already will present it this week. We will be continuing close reading with our ReadyGen  story, the Athabaskans,  and will also be working on supplementary comprehension Quizlets.  There will not be a February book report, but students should continue to be reading at least 15 minutes nightly. The Great America Reading Challenge is due by February 15 so students should be completing their forms and returning them to school with the 600 minutes recorded in order to receive a free pass to Great America.

Writing: Students will continue to work on informative/ explanatory writing about a famous person.

Grammar: This week students will practice various skills in Simple Solutions Grammar and enjoy some grammar games. There will  be a short 10 question Simple Solutions Quiz  this week on Friday. Skills covered include, comparative adjectives, using commas and quotation marks, correct verb tense, writing complete sentences, capitalization, collective nouns ( pack, swarm, gaggle, flock etc.)singular possessive nouns, and descriptive adjectives.

More division strategies are being presented and practiced  as we finish chapter 6.Students should know the multiplication facts 0-12 and now they should be memorizing the division facts. There will  be a Simple Solutions Quiz on Friday, February 8th.

Science: In unit 3 this week students will  learn about animal life cycles.  They will compare and contrast the life cycles of mammals, birds, frogs and insects. The students will learn some insects go through a complete metamorphosis and others an incomplete metamorphosis. Students will also participate in a fun STEAM activity.

Social Studies: In conjunction with President’s Day,  each student will be researching a different president and then will assemble a mobile containing the information  that they learned about the president. A detailed information/requirement sheet will be given to each child.  Students will select their president from a jar filled with names of the presidents. We expect this to be a fun leaning experience for your child.  We have some fun fact- filled reference books at school and will  provide some time to start this research at school. This will be due Tuesday, February 19th.

Valentine’s Day:  Students can prepare a decorated Valentine box at home and bring it to school the week of Valentines Day. Room 111 has 19 students and 112 has 20 students. If Valentines are brought to school, a valentine for each child in the classroom is necessary. It is fine to just write the name of the student who is bringing the Valentine on the back of the card.
