Terrific Third Grade 1-18-2019

Photos are of our third graders  presenting their science posters showing changes in technology.

Religion:   Students will review Chapter 8: The Four Marks of the Church. The marks are that the church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.  On Wednesday, Jan.23rd , students will take the Chapter 8 religion test.  The January prayer, the beautiful Prayer of St. Francis, will be recited  January 31 th.  FYI third grade will be hosting the Mass on Wednesday, February 27 so please check and see if your schedule permits you to come and pray with us.

Phonics: Students will continue to identify vowel pairs and vowel digraphs in Unit 5.

Spelling: The weekly spelling unit, # 19,  consists of words with the /aw/ sound spelled with either aw or o . The tested words will be:  draw, cost, dawn, across, belong, cross, soft, crawl, son, boss, straw, lawn, raw, lost, and law.  Students  will identify word structure, analyze vowel sounds, proofread sentences and use analogies, antonyms and context clues.  The unit 19 spelling test will be on Friday, January 25th.

Language:  Students will  be reciting their selected poem in front of the class on January 3oth.

Reading:  Students will be working on identifying  key features and topic sentences as they read several short selections this week.  Students received a packet of book report questions on Monday and the set of cube pieces on Friday. This should be completed and returned  this Friday, January 25th.  Students should be reading at least 15 minutes nightly. The Great America Reading Challenge should be filled as daily reading is done in order to receive a free pass to Great America.

Writing: Students will work on informative/ explanatory writing.

Grammar: This week students will continue to practice various skills in Simple Solutions Grammar . There will be a short Simple Solutions Quiz on Friday. Skills tested in the quiz include:  writing a title, use of  proper sentence end marks, selecting action verbs,  using future tense verbs in sentences, using comparative adjectives, and identifying the correct homophone.

Math:   More division strategies will be presented and practiced in Chapter 6. Students should have already memorized the multiplication facts 0-12 and now they should be practicing the division facts. The weekly Simple Solutions Quiz will be on Friday, January 25th.

Science: In unit 3 this week students will be learning about plant and animal life cycles.  Important vocabulary words are life cycles, germinates, flower, reproduce, cones, pollen, pollination,  and spores.

Social Studies: Students will be learning more about Martin Luther King Jr. and then  they will be using a time line to put important events in the proper  sequence.  See the photo below of students with Martin Luther King’s Dream, and their dream.

IMPORTANT:  By Thursday please send in a wire or plastic coat hanger and a St. Cletus spirit wear shirt, regular uniform shirt, or sweatshirt.  They are needed for a project  we are doing for Sunday’s Open  House.

If your family has a last names starting with M-Z , and  you were not able to bring in supplies last week, please send them in this upcoming week. Classroom supplies included  tissues, baby wipes,  zip lock quart sized baggies, disinfecting  wipes, and paper towels.  Thank you!
