The Christmas Program 12.13.18
Religion: Students will continue to learn more about Advent and Christmas. We will go to 9am Mass on Thursday, December 20th. Third grade has been assigned to bring in cake mixes and frosting for the annual Christmas food baskets. Each child is also asked to bring in a monetary donation of at least $1 so families can purchase perishable items. Items need to be brought in by Friday, December 21st.
Phonics: Students will continue both to practice how to add suffixes and endings to base words this week and then to remove the suffixes resulting in the base word. Some additional suffixes students will use include ly, ness, ful, y, and less.
Language: Students should continue practicing their selected December poem which will be recited Thursday, December 20th. Please encourage your child to use good expression. Using a prop as the poem is recited can be beneficial to help with expression and eliminates some nervousness.
Spelling: The weekly spelling unit 16 focuses on words with a schwa sound. The unit words are: animal, another, afraid, around, about, again, awake, asleep, above, over, never, open, ever, couple, upon. In this unit students will be working with proverbs, context clues, analogies, and proofreading. The unit 16 spelling test will be on Friday, December 21st .
Reading: Students should be reading at least 15 minutes nightly and should be filling in the reading record for the Great America Reading Challenge and free pass. There will NOT be a book report in December. In class we are working on visualization within a story and text features in nonfiction. There will be a Text Feature test on Thursday, December 20th.
Writing: Students are working on Christmas writing in class.
Grammar: This week the grammar emphasis will be on adjectives. We will have a quiz this week on lessons 45 – 48 focusing on conjunctions, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, subjects, adding the suffixes “ness:” and “ly” to words that end in “y”, types of sentences, and correctly writing a title. The quiz should be on Thursday.
Math: The weekly Simple Solutions Quiz will be on Friday, December 21st. In class we will be continue to practice the multiplication facts 0-12. Please help your child memorize these. See the photos below as students practiced their multiplication facts as they had fun playing games. If anyone has extra catalogs, store promotional ads, sale papers, and newspaper ads please send them in by Monday for a math project.
Science: Students should be finishing their research and starting to assemble their Technology poster project which is due either on December 21 or January 11. Please select the date which works best for your family. Our classes designed and built the largest Christmas trees possible as a STEAM project this week. Social Studies: Next week students will be learning about the historic Hull House in Chicago, and where our nation’s immigrants have come from.
