Religion: Students will be learning about Advent and the church calendar this week. For the annual Christmas food baskets third grade has been assigned to bring in cake mixes and frosting. (We believe brownie mix will also be appreciated.) Each child is also asked to bring in a monetary donation of at least $1 so families can purchase the perishable meat, dairy, produce, and bread items. Items can be brought in starting Monday, 12.10.18 through the 21st. Christmas Program: Our lovely 1st -4th grade Christmas program will be this Thursday, December 13 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center. Family and friends are invited to attend.
Phonics: Students will be practicing how to add suffixes and endings to base words this week.
Language: Students should continue practicing their selected December poem which will be recited December 20th. Please encourage your child to use good expression. Using a prop as the poem is recited can be beneficial to help with expression and eliminates some nervousness.
Spelling: The weekly spelling unit 15 focuses on digraphs and blends which we have studied in phonics. The unit words are: shook, flash, speech, think, strong, cloth, brook, stitch, string scratch, fresh, spring, switch, stretch, and splash. In this unit students will be working with context clues, analogies, forming compound words, proofreading, and word building. The unit 15 spelling test will be on Friday, December 14th .
Reading: We will continue to read and discuss Treasure in the Trees this week. Finding the story’s central message and points of view will still be the focus. Students will also continue to learn more nonfiction text features. Novel vocabulary: exasperated, grove, frustrated, underside, urged, creature, and destroyed. Students should be reading at least 15 minutes nightly and should be filling in the reading record for the Great America Reading Challenge and free pass. There will NOT be a book report in December.
Writing: Students are working on expository writing in class.
Grammar: This week the grammar emphasis will be on adjectives. No quiz this week due to the Christmas program.
Math: The weekly Simple Solutions Quiz will be on Friday, December 14th. In class we are reviewing all the multiplication facts 0-12. Please help your child memorize these. We are still looking for extra catalogs, store promotional ads, sale papers, and newspaper ads for a math project. Thank you to those parents who were already able to share!
Science: As part of our STEM program students will work together to design and build a paper Christmas tree.
Science: Students should be doing some research for their Technology poster project which is due either on December 21 or January 11. Please select the date which works best for your family. Students have selected their individual topic and have received all directions.
Social Studies: We will be learning why people move to new communities in social studies, chapter 3.
