Religion: Room 111 did an excellent job with morning prayers this past week! Third grade is responsible for the Thanksgiving Prayer Service. They will be getting ready by preparing for the annual food collection and practicing new songs. In the Second Step program, students will be learning how to resist the impulse to steal and understanding the short and long term consequences. We are still praying the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary in class. There will be Sorrowful rosary quiz next Friday. We are finishing chapter 3 in our text with a review. The chapter test will be on Thursday, November 14th. The November prayer will be recited on November 26th. There will be an all school Mass honoring Veterans on Monday.
Language: November poems will be recited on November 21st.
Grammar: This week students identify types of sentences, find the complete subject of a sentence, write book titles correctly with capitals and underlining, complete words with the /shun/ sound spelled “tion,” identify action verbs or verbs of being, locate adverbs and the verb it describes and select the present tense verb in a sentence. They will also identify conjunctions, and locate an adverb in a sentence and the verb it describes. On Friday students will take the 12th weekly grammar quiz.
Reading: Students will be reading about the impossible for their next book report. The genre will be science fiction or fantasy. The book report will be due on December 6th. Students will be finishing reading theTreasure in the Trees. We will still be focused on identifying the central message or main idea by looking closely at the details that support them. The vocabulary words are: gnarled, exasperated, grove, frustrated, urged, creature, destroyed , unfurled, hastily, rumbling, desperately, inched, exclaimed, creatures, generous, triumphantly, and underside. Students will have the comprehension/vocabulary test on Thursday, November 14th.
Spelling: Unit 12 reviews the long a, e, i, and o vowel patterns that they studied these last few weeks. They will focus on using word meanings, rhyming, spelling patterns, and context clues. The spelling 12 test will be on Friday, November 15th.
Phonics: This week students will focus on the three sounds of y and consonant digraphs.
Math: Students are now in Go Math Chapter 4, Strategies of Multiplication. They really mastered the concepts in chapter 3. On Friday students will take the Simple Solutions math quiz #12.
Social Studies: We talked and read about Veterans’ Day in class. Students each worked on a small History of Veterans’ Day booklet. We will continue to remember our Veterans at Mass on Monday and as we do some more readings about Veterans’ Day during the week.
Science: Students had a great time with our classroom STEM activities deciding which packing material was the best. What material would get your package to its destination safely and which was also the most earth-friendly?
Headphones/Ear Buds: Please send in headphones or ear buds for your child to use when using the computer in class if they do not already have them. These will remain in the back pack unless they are being used by your child.
Recess & Cold Weather, A reminder: We try to have outside recess unless it is raining or snowing. In addition to a coat, please make sure your child has a hat and mittens for the cold days.
