Terrific Third Grade October 25, 2019


Religion:   Third grade will be responsible for the morning prayers to be read over the PA  for the next two weeks.  Students will understand and practice how to deal with peer pressure as we work in the 2nd unit of the Second Step program, “Impulse Control and Problem Solving.”  We will also be praying the  sorrowful mysteries rosary in class.   Students will continue learning about the second coming of Jesus  and how we will be judged.  Third grade will  NOT attend the 8 am Mass on Thursday since they will be in their Halloween costumes. The October prayer will be recited on Thursday, the 31st.

Language:  The third graders are writing Halloween stories and decorating them with large scary hats.

Grammar: Skills students will be practicing this week include , articles,  identifying adjectives and the word it modifies,  correctly writing addresses, capitalizing and underlining book titles, identifying a simple sentence, finding the subject of a sentence, using verbs of being,  and selecting the correct homophone.   On Thursday students will take the 10th weekly grammar quiz.

Reading:    The October mystery book report file is due on Monday, October 28th. On Tuesday we will finish, “The Moon Seems to Change,” with  an open book quiz.  Students will be learning about text features and how they help to understand non-fiction.

Spelling:  Unit 10 teaches students about the long i vowel  patterns of i and igh.  They will practice using antonyms, idioms,  using context clues, rhyming, and proofreading a friendly letter.  The spelling 10 test will be on Thursday, October 31st.

Phonics:   In unit 3 students will begin work with compound words including determining the vowel sound in each part. They will also identify the number of syllables in a word.

Math:   In Go Math  students will  model multiplication problems with arrays and understand  how to use the commutative property with addition. On Thursday students will take the  Simple Solutions math quiz #10.

Science:  Students will be reviewing the  difference between observation and inquiry and the different types of tools scientists use and how they are used.

Recess & Cold Weather: We try to have outside recess unless it is raining or snowing. In addition to a coat, please make sure your child has a hat and mittens for the cold days.

Headphones/Ear Buds:  Please send in headphones or ear buds for your child to use when using the computer in class if they do not already have them. These will remain  in the back pack unless they are being used by your child.

Special dates:

Monday, October 28th:  Trunk or Treat after school

Thursday, October 31st:  NO 8 am Mass…. Halloween… wear costumes according to St. Cletus policy…. Class party at 2 pm

Friday, November 1st:  No school for students…Teacher Institute Day
