Math: This week, students wrapped up chapter 4 with a summative test. Any test corrections made on this test must be turned in by Monday, 3/8. We then jumped right into chapter 5, and began to review multiples, and patterns- an important foundation before we begin our unit on fractions and decimals. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of divisibility, prime numbers, and composite numbers.

Reading: Students are enjoying our novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. Our focus these past weeks has been vocabulary, summarization, characterization, and referring to the text. These upcoming weeks we will continue exercising these skills, but also looking at the type of conflict found with in the novel, making predictions and connections, as well as, cause and effect.

Spelling/Grammar/Writing: For the week of 3/8, students will be reviewing the spelling patterns learned from units 19-23. Following this, unit 25 explores both regular and irregular plural words. In both units, students will be able to identify the meanings of spelling words and categorize spelling words based on meaning. In writing, students have completed a rough draft of a biographical paper based on information they gathered from research. Students also reflected on their work, assessing how to improve for a final draft. This editing and revising will be completed in the coming weeks. In order to produce a final draft, students will be focusing on grammatical concepts such as verb tense agreement, capitalization, and punctuation, and avoiding run-ons and fragments.

Science: This week, students learned all about weather. We explored how humidity affects air pressure, and how air pressure affects wind. Students have also learned about three main types of clouds, and created their own flip book with which to study them. Next week, students will create their own anemometer to measure wind speed. After this lesson, students will learn how weather is predicted.

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our Midwest Unit and will be moving on to the Southwest. The Southwest region while small (ONLY 4 STATES) has a lot of information and history to share with us. We will be going over the kinds of land found in the southwest, the resources available both renewable and renewable, as well as the history.

Religion: We recently finished We Believe chapter 5, where students learned the importance of asking for God’s forgiveness and striving to share God’s gift of peace and unity with other people. We celebrated Ash Wednesday this week, marking the start of the Liturgical season of Lent. Students decided on three Lenten promises that they will follow during this season. Next week, we will begin our chapter on Lent, where students will learn what we are preparing for during Lent, and how we are preparing for reconciliation which is Wednesday, March 9th.
