Math: We are still working our way through Ch. 1 of Go Math. These next two weeks we will be reviewing and tackling the concepts of rounding numbers, renaming numbers, adding/subtracting whole numbers and solving word problems.
Reading: Students will begin to read our first story, Porpoises in Peril in the ReadyGen program. Using the text the students will identify point of view, determine meaning of words, as well as, understanding sequence of events. Students will also be working on written responses where they are to refer to details and examples when explaining what a text says.
Spelling/Grammar/Writing: For spelling, we looked at short vowels last week, this week we will be looking at long vowels. Students will sort their spelling words into the appropriate categories. They will also be using them for analogies. In Grammar, students are continuing their refresher on capitalization and punctuation. We will also begin looking into what a complete sentence entails using our Shirley English jingles. As writers the students are beginning to work on personal narratives of a snapshot moment in their life. The focus is to write about a moment in their life with great detail.
Science: Students will begin the science curriculum by exploring and explaining what scientists do. Using inquiry skills, students will describe that science focuses on the natural world only. They will communicate that scientists conduct multiple types of investigations, and recognize that scientific knowledge requires evidence. Students practice being active readers by annotating their text with notes and marks that help with comprehension.
Social Studies: Students have written their first draft of their postcards to send out to the 49 other states. Our goal is to have received 40 or more postcards. We are very excited about this project and if you as a parent would like to help us, donating Forever stamps would be greatly appreciated. Aside from the postcards we will be learning about the landforms of the United States.
Religion/SEL: This week, students will learn more about Jesus, who shows us the way God the Father wants us to live. They will begin to understand that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. By following Jesus, we grow closer to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We will also be focusing this week on setting boundaries and respecting the boundaries set by others.
Please be sure to revisit the dress code for 1-4th grade.
Thank you so much for your constant support and cooperation!
