***Due to our Halloween celebration our House celebration will be moved to the following week.

Math: Memorization of multiplication facts will be incredibly beneficial for your child as we continue to progress through this chapter and the next few to come. Students should practice their tables daily. They can practice their multiplication facts by creating flash cards, using IXL or ExtraMath. These next two weeks will be using the distributive property to multiply 3 digit numbers. We will also begin looking at other methods such as multiplying using expanded form, partial products, solving multi-step word problems, and multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers with regrouping.

Reading: We have been looking at the tall tale from the Philippines titled, Why the Sea is Salty? As a class we have discussed the characteristics of the tall tale genre. We are also going to begin the Native American, How the Stars Fell into the Sky. We are using these texts to practice these reading skills: comparing view point, analyzing problem and solutions, analyzing theme, and deciphering figurative language such as idioms.

Spelling/Grammar/Writing: Our spelling list for the coming week will focus on the diphthongs oi (as in boil) and ou (as in flour). The following list focuses on the vowel sounds ôr (as in form) and ô (as in bought). Using their spelling list students will work on sorting their words based on pronunciation. In Grammar, students are continuing to learn and use the parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. In writing, the students have completed their first writing piece of the year.

Science:  It is a very exciting time in Science class as we prepare to create models of our ideal classrooms! In small groups, students plan and create a shoebox diorama of a classroom that they consider to be perfect. Students have learned about two dimensional models, three dimensional models, computer models, scale models, and more. They have learned what each can be used for and how they can save lives. Following the model project, students will have a unit review test to show that they are able to answer the following: What Do Scientists Do? What Skills Do Scientists Use? How Do Scientists Collect and Use Data? Why Do Scientists Compare Results? What Kinds of Models Do Scientists Use?

Social Studies: We are diving into the history of the Northeast. We are looking at the Native Americans who lived in the Northeast before European settlers. We will also be looking at places in the Northeast where history was made such as Ellis Island and Seneca Falls. These quizzes will be given weekly. Students will take the quiz weekly until the end of the unit or they have scored 100%. The highest score will be taken for a grade. These next two weeks we will be exploring the resources of the Northeast and its history.

Religion: In Religion, we will continue chapter 2, in which the students learn that Jesus Christ leads us to happiness. We are also getting ready for All Saints Day Mass by preparing mass and researching a saint. Our social emotional lessons have been focusing on showing empathy and being a good friend to all.

Please be sure to revisit the dress code for 3-8th.

Thank you so much for your constant support and cooperation!

P.S For a house point have your child tell us the code word: ghouls
