Math: We are wrapping up your first multiplication chapter. This chapter has helped us re familiarize ourselves with multiplication as well as the various methods to multiply multi-digit numbers. Our test will be given on Thursday, November 18th. We will then begin Ch. 3 which builds off of Ch. 2. We will be working on multiplying by 10’s, estimating products, and investigating area models and partial products.

Reading: The war between Nick and Mrs. Granger continues! How exciting! The students have really taken a liking to the book and are wondering how it all is going to pan out. As we continue reading the novel we will be looking at cause and effect, figurative language, identifying and writing opinions, sequencing, and major vs minor characters.

Spelling/Grammar/Writing: Our spelling list for the coming week will focus on the r-controlled vowels, for example “share” and “march.” Using their spelling list students will work on sorting their words based on pronunciation. The following week, we will focus on words with more letters than sounds, such as “meant.” In Grammar, students are focusing on learning and creating complex vs simple sentences.

Science: Having finished our first science unit, we are moving on to our Engineering Design Process chapter. Following this unit, students will be able to answer the following questions: What Is an Engineering Design Process? How Can You Design a Solution to a Problem? What Is Technology?  How Do We Use Technology? After our focus on the engineering process, we will move on to our unit about plants and animals.

Social Studies: We have wrapped up our Northeast unit. If your child would like to retake their Northeast states and capitals quiz they may do so before or after school by appointment. Northeast retakes will not be available after the 19th. We have begun learning about the Southeast region. We have learned about the landforms and how the southeast region looks like. Over the course of the next two weeks we will be looking at the climate, resources, and it’s history.

Religion: We continue CH. 3 in Religion, which is about Jesus teaching the Beatitudes as  the way to true happiness. In this chapter the students will learn that God gives us the freedom to choose to love and follow him. They will learn that choices that lead us away from God are called sins.
