Math: We are continuing ch. 3, Multiply by 2 digit numbers. These next two weeks we will be moving away from estimating products and begin solving multiplication problems that require students to multiply by 2 digit numbers. We will be using various strategies such as: area model, partial products, regrouping, and choosing a multiplication method. This is a short chapter, so we will be testing before Winter Break on Tuesday, December, 21st. Information regarding study sessions will be sent out as we get closer to the date.
Reading: We are nearing the end of our Frindle novel study. We will have our final comprehension checkpoint quiz on Wednesday, December 8th. After which we will be revisiting our ReadyGen curriculum. We will be using the story The Longest Night to work on our comprehension skills as well as analyzing characters, describing events, and making inferences.
Spelling/Grammar/Writing: Students completed spelling unit 14 which was composed of words with short vowel sounds. Units 15 and 16 cover silent and complex consonants. Using their spelling list students will work on sorting their words based on spelling and pronunciation. In Grammar, students are learning to distinguish between simple, complex, and compound sentences. In writing class, the students wrote a short persuasive piece about a parade float or balloon that they believe should be included in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Next week, students will continue our persuasive unit by writing a job application letter explaining why they should be hired as an elf at the North Pole.
Science: Recently, the students learned that the five steps of the engineering design process are: Find a problem, Plan and build, Test and improve, Redesign, and Communicate. We practiced identifying a need or problem and coming up with a product or process to solve it. Currently, we are working through our lesson on technological processes, products, and systems. Following the end of this lesson this week, the students will practice using the design process to create a catapult using popsicle sticks.
Social Studies: We are learning about the Southeast. These next two weeks we will be focusing on important historical events, tourism, and the culture. As always we take a states and capitals test every Friday. Students who pass with a 100% do not take it, instead they work on geography skills. Those that do not pass are able to take it again. The highest score is kept.
Religion: We continue CH. 3 wherein the students are learning that God gives us the freedom to choose to love and follow him. We will continue to discuss that choices that lead us away from God are called sins. Additionally, we are spending time reviewing the meaning of the Advent season. The students have learned that God prepared for Jesus over many generations. During Advent, it is our job to prepare for Jesus’ arrival by completing acts of kindness.
