Math: Throughout unit 4 of our Go Math curriculum, students learned to divide tens, hundreds, and thousands by one digit divisors. Students used multiple methods with which to estimate quotients. Students have practiced interpreting remainders, using models to divide whole numbers that do not divide evenly, and many more division strategies. Our chapter culminates in a summative test on Friday, 2/25. Following this, we will begin chapter 5, which briefly reviews factors, multiples, and patterns- an important foundation before we begin our unit on fractions and decimals.
Reading: We have officially begun our next novel study using the novel Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. We will be using this novel to further our comprehension skills. Students have practiced using context clues to determine meaning, as well as searching for words in a dictionary. Students also practiced comprehension and summarization. We will continue to practice these skills using this book in the coming weeks.
Spelling/Grammar/Writing: In spelling unit 22, students will read, identify, spell, and write words with the -er and -est suffix. In spelling unit 23, students will sort homophone pairs, identifying how spelling affects meaning. In both units, students will be able to identify the meanings of spelling words and categorize spelling words based on meaning. Students have begun to learn different types of “hooks,” which are used to grab a reader’s attention in the beginning of an introductory paragraph. In the following weeks, students will continue to write the rough draft of their biographical paper. In grammar, students will practice their formal writing skills while drafting this rough draft. We will use this time to revisit capitalization, punctuation, complete sentences, and sentence variation.
Science: We are having a blast exploring our weather unit! We recently concluded our lesson on the water cycle. All students are welcome to complete a 10 pt. extra credit opportunity by creating a poster, comic strip, or story all about the many aspects of the water cycle. The optional project is due Friday, February 25th. Currently, students are learning about types of weather. After this lesson, students will be able to describe the composition of the atmosphere, identify factors that make up weather, explain how weather conditions are measured, explain how different types of precipitation form, and describe some forms of severe weather. After this lesson, students will learn how weather is predicted.
Social Studies: We are continuing our Midwest unit. We will be discussing the explorers, Fur Trade, and key historical events. We will be analyzing timelines and points of view, as well as looking at primary sources.
Religion: As we finish chapter 5 in the We Believe textbook, students have learned all about the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Students have examined what Jesus tells us about God’s forgiveness and love, and understand that reconciliation brings peace and unity. Following this unit, students should acknowledge the importance of asking for God’s forgiveness, as well as strive to share God’s gift of peace and unity with other people.
