Math: We are continuing to use various strategies to divide such as the distributive property, partial quotients, model division. We will also be working on placing the first digit of the quotient in the correct place and begin learning the traditional method of division.

Reading: Fourth grade is starting their next whole class novel, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. We will be using this novel to further our comprehension skills. We will be looking at vocabulary and defining words using context clues, summarization, and elements of plot will be some of the first skills we practice.

Spelling/Grammar/Writing: We will be continuing our unit on words ending in “le” and “en.” The following spelling unit involves words ending in “er,” “or,” and words with the “schwa” vowel sound followed by “r.” The students will use their biography research packets to begin their biographical rough draft. We will begin by reviewing how to create an effective attention getter.

Science: We have started our weather unit, which is kicked off by a lesson on the water cycle. Students will describe the water cycle and the role that evaporation, condensation, and precipitation play in it; explain how the sun provides the energy for the water cycle; explain how the oceans and other bodies of water interact through the water cycle; and describe the path of precipitation from cloud to ground to runoff and groundwater. Following this lesson, we will learn about different types of weather.

Social Studies: Thank you to everyone who donated stamps 🙂 Your donations have been greatly appreciated. We are sending out our postcard this coming Thursday, February 10th. We are continuing our Midwest unit. We will be discussing the climate of the Midwest, our resources, and the Native American tribes that inhabited the land before us.

Religion: During Catholic schools week, students brainstormed ways to serve their communities. We focused on how to show compassion the way that Jesus showed compassion. As we pick up in chapter 5, we will focus on celebrating the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Students learn that through these, we receive God’s forgiveness and love, as well as peace and unity in our lives.

Announcements/Reminders:

Please be sure to revisit the dress code for 3-8th. As a reminder, please be sure to send your child dressed for the weather. We will be having outdoor recess as long as the weather permits.
