Math: During the week of 3/21, we will wrap up chapter 5, reviewing factors, multiples, divisibility, and prime and composite numbers. Following this, we will begin chapter 6, “Fraction Equivalence and Comparison.” Students will identify and generate equivalent fractions and fractions in their simplest form. Students will use what they have learned about common multiples to write a pair of fractions as fractions with a common denominator.
Reading: Students are enjoying our novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. Our focus these past weeks has been the type of conflict found within the novel, making predictions and connections, as well as cause and effect. As we approach the conclusion of the novel study, we continue to use background knowledge and text evidence to form inferences about the text. Students are also practicing creating a detailed and succinct summary of a portion of the text.
Spelling/Grammar/Writing: Spelling unit 26, beginning Monday March 21st, covers base words with prefixes un-, re-, and pre-. Spelling unit 27 covers base words with the suffix -er. In both units, students will be able to read, spell, and define their spelling words, as well as extend spelling patterns to new words. In writing, students will be meeting one-on-one with their teacher to review their biographical rough drafts and identify any changes that should be made while creating their final drafts. In grammar, students are continuing to focus on editing skills. We will also be revisiting parts of speech.
Science: Students had a blast testing their hand-made anemometers outside in the wind! We are continuing our weather unit by learning how weather is predicted. This lesson concludes our weather unit. Up next: Earth and space! After completing the Earth and space unit, students will be able to answer the following questions. How Do the Sun, Earth, and Moon Interact? What Are Moon Phases? How Does the Moon Move Around Earth? What Are the Planets in Our Solar System? How Can We Model the Sun and Planets?
Social Studies: We are heading West these next upcoming weeks! While the West Region is only 4 states it still has a great importance in the history of our nation. These upcoming weeks we will learn and discuss the climate, landforms, and resources found in the West. We will also be taking our West States and Capitals test Thursday, March 24th.
Religion: Our current Religion chapter, chapter 8, focuses on learning about God’s Law. Students will learn that the Ten Commandments are God’s Laws for his people, and that Jesus teaches us about these Laws. We will respond in faith by identifying ways we can show love for others by our actions, and expressing joy that we are called to be God’s people.
