  • CLASSES RESUME

Math: We have begun chapter 6, “Fraction Equivalence and Comparison.” Students are hard at work identifying and generating equivalent fractions. In the coming weeks, we will proceed with learning about fractions in their simplest form, common denominators, and comparing and ordering fractions.

Reading:  We are wrapping up our novel study of Where the Red Fern Grows. This novel has allowed us to explore many reading skills, strategies, and themes. As we end our novel, we will take a deeper look at the types of conflict, major and minor characters, the themes found in the book, as well as supporting details. We will also be viewing the movie and comparing and contrasting the two forms.

Spelling/Grammar/Writing: In spelling, we will continue our focus on suffixes, reviewing words ending in -ful and -less. In both units, students will be able to read, spell, and define their spelling words, as well as extend spelling patterns to new words. In writing and grammar, students will finish the final drafts of their biographies, with a focus on formatting, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and other fine-tuning aspects of writing an essay.

Science: Students have been learning about how the Earth’s rotation causes day and night. They have learned that the tilt of Earth’s axis and its orbit around the sun cause seasons. We will continue to learn about constellations and our place in the solar system. Following this lesson, students will learn about the phases of the moon, and will be able to identify and predict changes in the appearance of the moon.

Social Studies: The Southwest region is well underway, with only 4 states we have been able to conquer our states and capitals much quicker than before.  We will be learning the Spanish influence in the southwest, cowboys and cowgirls, as well as living in a desert.

Religion: Students are learning about God’s greatest commandment, and that the ten commandments help us to follow this greatest commandment. We have also begun our Growing with God curriculum, learning that healthy boundaries protect our sacred bodies and souls. We will continue learning about friendship and safety awareness.
