ENJOY YOUR SUMMER VACATION! CONGRATULATIONS ON OFFICIALLY BECOMING 5th GRADERS!!!

Math: We have said goodbye to fractions and hello to geometry! We’ve begun our chapter on two dimensional figures, learning all about lines, angles, rays, triangles, quadrilaterals, parallel and perpendicular lines, and lines of symmetry.

Next, we will be learning about units of measurement, followed by perimeter and area.

Reading:  We are loving our current novel, Hatchet. This novel has produced thoughtful and interesting conversations about themes, inferences, questions, and more. As we continue our novel study, we will discuss the dynamic main character, focusing on changes in his outlook and relationship with nature. Students continue to develop opinions, inferences, and summaries citing specific details from the text.

Spelling/Grammar/Writing: In spelling, we will continue our focus on suffixes, reviewing words ending in -ness and -ment. Students will be able to read, spell, and define their spelling words, as well as extend spelling patterns to new words. In writing, students are developing arguments and supporting reasons, creating and formatting one final essay for the year. We will end 4th grade grammar with a “grammar boot camp” to prepare students for fifth grade. Our grammar focus for the rest of the year will be parts of speech, types of sentences, subjects and predicates, and parsing sentences.

Science: Learning about space was out of this world! Students completed their Earth and Space test this past week, and we have begun our unit on energy. Students will learn what energy is, where energy comes from, what heat is, and what conductors and insulators are.

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our last region… the West! WE will be learning all about the Gold Rush along with the booming industry of the West. We will then be creating travel commercials to persuade others to visit a state in the region of their choice.

Religion: To wrap up fourth grade Religion, students are focusing on each of the ten commandments. Students will be able to explain in their own words what each commandment means, and what it looks like to live out the commandments in our lives.

Announcements/Reminders:

As the weather warms up, please be sure to revisit the dress code for 3-8th, including expectations for dress-down days.

If the temperature is above 85 students are allowed to come to school in their gym uniforms.

Thank you so much for your constant support and cooperation!

P.S For a house point have your child tell us the code word: summer
