Math: We are continuing to work on concepts that center on our knowledge of place value. This week we will be tackling adding and subtracting numbers up to the hundred thousands place (6 digit numbers). We will be using various methods to do so such as part-part-whole, draw a diagram, and bar model, which will conclude our 1st chapter of Go Math! There will be a test the week of September 16th.

Reading: We have begun our first chapter book in our ReadyGen series titles, Porpoises in Peril. We have been discussing different reading strategies to deepen out comprehension of the story. The strategies we have worked on are inferring, using textual evidence to support a claim/ opinion. We have also worked on identify problem and characterization.

Spelling/ Grammar: For spelling our new pattern is vowel consonant-e. These spelling words will be our focus for the next two weeks. Using these words, our activities will focus on synonyms, word structure, suffixes, completing analogies, and using context clues. In grammar, we will continue focusing on identifying parts of speech within sentences. Homework for this week will focus on parts of speech.

Writing: In writing we have finished up our #Allaboutme. It was great getting to know the students on an individual level. As fourth graders there are certain standards that we adhere when writing. Together we will identify and discuss the standards. Our next focus is developing narrative pieces. Our first piece centers around a small moment in our lives. Students will be taking a small moment and utilizing their 5 senses to expand their writing.

Science: Students discussed the different roles that scientists have in our world. This past week, students completed their first lab using the scientific method. Our next focus will be identifying the inquiry skills scientists use in everyday life. There will be a quiz at the end of this week on what scientists do.

Social Studies: We have learned and sung about the 5 themes of geography. Now that we have a good understanding of them we will be moving forward in geography. Together we will be learning about the components of various maps and how to read them using cardinal directions, as well as, latitude and longitude. From there we will move on to primary and secondary sources.

Religion: 4th grade has the honor of leading our school’s Grandparents’ Day Mass on September 27th. Students will begin practicing and preparing the mass now that we have worked on identifying the four parts of Mass ( Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and Concluding Rites). We will also be looking at the Liturgical year.
