Friday, May 9: MOMS, please mark your calendars: Friday, May 9th from 10:30-11:30ish is the kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea! This kindergarten event has been a St. Cletus kindergarten tradition for over 30 years! Your child is going to work really hard to make it a special hour for you by learning new songs, making special art projects, yummy treats and more. You won’t want to miss this special event!
What’s Due: *****If we’ve lent your child a change of clothes at any point this year–underwear, shorts, shirt– please wash and return ASAP. Our classroom stash has been depleted! This is also a good time to remind all to keep spare pants, underwear, socks in your child’s backpack. It remains in there so you can change the spare clothes out as the weather changes and as your child grows. Spills, bathroom accidents, falls in the mud, etc. happen and we do lots of changes in kindergarten. 🙂 Thank you for your help!****

- Summer camps at St. Cletus are coming out now! I wanted to highlight the camp being taught by Mrs. Zontos and Ms. Sonia Sanchez. It runs from June 9th-27th. You can choose 1, 2 or 3 weeks. Camp runs from 9-3pm. It’s for early childhood students only. Mrs. Zontos LOVED running the half day camp last year and received permission to extend the camp to 3pm this year! The flyer went home in the Wednesday envelope a few weeks ago. If you need another copy, reach out! It would be fun to get a kindergarten (going into 1st!) crew together to attend!

Language Arts:
- We will continue to practice LAST names.
- We will continue unit 2 in Fundations with Q, R, S, T capital letter formation. We are now blending 3, 4, even 5 sounds!
- We will continue to meet in reading group. We will practice fluency passages, Superkids decodable books and fundations word work practice. A student’s fluency will improve when reading the same text multiple times. The passages and/or books that I send home in the book pouches have all been practiced here at school in reading group. I am asking you to practice a bit more at home and then send it back so we can continue on to the next passages! Rereads are so, so important. Keep the pouches for several days and practice each night. Thank you for your support at home.
- High Frequency words: I have introduced: NO, GO, THE, YES, WE, TO, WILL, DO, A, MY, LIKE, AND, HAVE, HAS, HIS, YOU, AT, IT, IF, IN and color words, RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE, WHITE, PINK, BLACK, BROWN, BY, WENT and number words ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT and NINE, AM, PLAY, WITH, LOVE and FROM, DEAR. Next week, I’ll introduce: OR, FOR.
- Journaling: Journaling will continue next week with students working so hard to add those “detail sentences.” Students are so detailed in their pictures, now we want to see details in their WORDS!
Read alouds: We will be diving into Elephant and Piggie readers by Mo Willems. These books have many of our word wall words. These books have repeated sentences with the only difference being a change in punctuation. This reminds us of the importance of reading with expression. And most importantly, these books are just plain FUNNY! We’re going to be doing a lot of laughing! Next week, I will also be sending home my list of book recommendations for our readers. Be sure to watch for that and keep it in a safe place!
Math: We’re still all about addition and subtraction in kindergarten! We will continue modules 11-13. Addition and subtraction will be our main focus through the end of February.
- Counting to 100 by ones. At home: please practice!
- Counting to 100 by tens (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100). At home: please practice!
- Counting to 100 by 5s. At home: please practice!
- Counting to 20 by 2s. At home: please practice!
- Acting out and solving addition problems within 10.
- Acting out and solving subtraction problems within 10.
We will also continue to practice:
- tallying, graphing and sorting!
Religion: We didn’t have enough time to finish our senses unit this past week, so we’ll get to that next week with a TASTE test! Students will test their senses by having a taste test. We’ll use words like sweet, sour, salty and bitter to describe foods. Thank you God for our senses which help us to learn more about your world and also help to keep us safe!
We will explore Bible stories next week where we see examples of Jesus showing love and kindness. Jesus is our greatest example of how to treat one another!
