Friday, May 9: MOMS, please mark your calendars: Friday, May 9th from 10:30-11:30ish is the kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea! This kindergarten event has been a St. Cletus kindergarten tradition for over 30 years! Your child is going to work really hard to make it a special hour for you by learning new songs, making special art projects, yummy treats and more. You won’t want to miss this special event!
Thursday, May 22: This will be our second and final kindergarten field trip day. We will be going to the La Grange library. I’ll send home the permission slips on WEDNESDAY, next week. If you’re interested in being a chaperone, you will indicate that on the form. We can take 5-6 volunteers!
Thursday, June 5: Kindergarten Celebration at 10am. Please mark your calendars now! ALL are welcome! Come watch the kindergartners celebrate the end of kindergarten on stage in the Parish Center. After the 10am performance which will last about one hour, families are welcome to stay and enjoy some treats together and then students will be dismissed to you for the afternoon.
What’s Due:
- Lenten donation next week (see religion section below): cereal, pancake, waffle mix…bring in Monday-Friday next week.

Language Arts:
- Fundations: We will be starting UNIT 4 in Fundations. Unit 4 focuses on 5 digraphs– wh, ch, sh, th, ck. We already started to talk about these sounds because it’s come up so often in our reading and writing, but now I’ll officially be introducing the concept of digraphs in Fundations. We talk about digraphs as “two letters working together to make a brand new sound.” We will practice decoding (reading) and encoding (writing) 3 sound words with digraphs (chip, shin, when, duck, etc.).
- Reading group: We will continue with fluency passages and Superkids books. Keep watching for those book pouches to come home and keep practicing with your child!
- High Frequency words: I have introduced: NO, GO, THE, YES, WE, TO, WILL, DO, A, MY, LIKE, AND, HAVE, HAS, HIS, YOU, AT, IT, IF, IN and color words, RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE, WHITE, PINK, BLACK, BROWN, BY, WENT and number words ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT and NINE, AM, PLAY, WITH, LOVE, FROM, DEAR, OR, FOR, CAN, NOT, ARE, HE, SHE. Next week, I will introduce: SAID
- Journaling: Journaling continues! The kids will be getting outside more with the nicer weather and they’ll have so much to write about it. We can’t read all about their adventures. We will also begin to do more opinion writing using the word “because.” We have a song to help us spell that big, long word!
Read alouds: Next week, we will begin our Eric Carle author study unit. Spring books will be at the listening center too!
Math: We started modules 14-16 in math which is all about 2D and 3D shapes. We will be learning:
- 2D shapes: circle, square, rhombus (instead of diamond, we will try to use the more mathematical term, rhombus), rectangle, triangle and oval. Students will learn these are FLAT, not FAT (3D shapes) shapes.
- Students will learn how many vertices or corners there are for each 2D shape.
- Students will learn how many sides there are for each 2D shape.
- 3D shapes: Cylinder, cube, cone, sphere. Students will learn these are SOLID shapes.
- Students will learn about whether these 3D shapes can stack, roll or slide.
- Money: coin recognition—penny, nickel, dime and quarter. The goal is to name each coin, give the value of each coin, and do some counting of coins. The concept of money is introduced in kindergarten just to expose the kids to it, but they’ll get much more into this skill in 2nd grade.
We will review:
- Counting to 100 by ones.
- Counting to 100 by tens (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100).
- Counting to 100 by 5s.
- Counting to 20 by 2s.
- Acting out and solving addition problems within 10.
- Acting out and solving subtraction problems within 10.
- Tallying, graphing and sorting.
Religion:
- We will continue our Lenten journey together focusing on prayer and almsgiving. We are working so hard to become more beautiful on the INSIDE, the part that really matters. We are praying more by adding the OUR FATHER to our morning prayer each day and we are also praying the Stations of the Cross each week. Our almsgiving efforts are also going strong with A LOT of pasta collected as well as some coins in our rice bowl. Thank you for encouraging your child to do these things during Lent! We dropped off the Mac and cheese/pasta at church when we prayed the stations on Friday and that’s when the kids came up with their next collection idea: cereal and/or pancake/waffle mix. Please bring these in any day next week! And as always, if it’s more important for these foods to be at your home, no worries!
