Kindergarten Newsletter, May 23

Next Week:

  • Friday, May 30th: Pajama day for kindergarten!

Looking Ahead/Mark your calendars:

Thursday, June 5: Kindergarten Celebration is at 10am.   ALL are welcome!  Come watch the kindergartners celebrate the end of kindergarten on stage in the Parish Center.  After the 10am performance, families are welcome to stay and enjoy some treats together and then students will be dismissed to you for the afternoon. Students will return the next day for the final all-school Mass at 9:30.  Dismissal for the summer is at 11am on Friday, June 6th.

This Week:

Our quiet time in the afternoon now includes the option of a Pete the Cat activity book!  Thanks Louie’s family for donating. 🙂 The kids have enjoyed the extra option during our rest time!

We had a great field trip to the LaGrange Library.  We got to show off all we know about caterpillars and butterflies and also get a little more excited about summer reading.  Please be sure to check out your local library’s summer  reading program.  The La Grange Library summer reading begins June 2. Kids LOVE incentives and this is a GREAT way to keep the reading going this summer! I will also be sending home additional summer ideas in a couple of weeks.

Next Week:

I will be busy with final assessments next week!  Report cards will go home the last week of school. We completed the math and reading iReady assessments earlier this week.  The kids did great!  It’s not an easy assessment for the little ones especially when spring fever has hit.  iReady results will be in your child’s report card envelope.  Please don’t put too much weight on that one assessment. Report cards are based off of my own assessments, not a computer, which tends to be much more accurate with the younger ones. 🙂

Next week, we will also be working on our kindergarten celebration performance!  We are working hard AND having lots of fun, right up until the last day of kindergarten. The kids are excited to start practicing on stage next week.  They can’t wait to perform for their families!

Language Arts:

  • My teacher-directed center next week will always be an assessment center.  This will keep us quite busy.
  • We will be finishing up our “opinion journals” next week.  These along with their regular writing journals will all come home in a large kindergarten memory envelope the last full day of school.  You’ll LOVE reading what they’ve had to say all year! 🙂

Math: We completed the final Math workbook this past week!  For the remainder of the school year, we will continue to focus on measurement and addition/subtraction. Calendar time is used to review all other skills listed below.

Review:

  • 2D shapes: circle, square, rhombus
  • 3D shapes: Cylinder, cube, cone, sphere.
  • Money: coin recognition and naming value of each—penny, nickel, dime and quarter.
  • Counting to 100 by ones.
  • Counting to 100 by tens (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100).
  • Counting to 100 by 5s.
  • Counting to 20 by 2s.
  • Acting out and solving  addition problems within 10.
  • Acting out and solving subtraction problems within 10.
  • Tallying, graphing and sorting.

Religion/Science:

  • We are anxiously waiting for our caterpillars to turn into butterflies! We have documented both the caterpillar and chrysalis stages and are now just waiting for the final butterfly stage!
  • Bean and popcorn seeds have been planted in soil and are growing quickly!  We wonder what they’ll look like after the long weekend.  It’s so fun to see the excitement our young ones have over the growth of plants. 🙂
