What’s Due:

  • Keep working on that name writing using the pages I sent home.  Turn the pages in as you complete them.  The children are doing a great job.  Again, I place a lot of focus on very explicit letter and number formation instruction so that we can dive deeper into writing and math skills without being so distracted or frustrated by HOW to make letters and numbers!  Thank you for your help at home!
  • Halloween info was sent home earlier this week:Halloween Guidelines for Kindergarten
  • The “house book” is making its way around the classroom!  When it’s your turn, return it be the date indicated on the inside front cover.  Who will be next!?

Next Week:

  • 8th grade “white out”: The 8th grade girls have their last home game next Thursday, 10/26 in the PC gym beginning at 4pm. This will be a “white out” game to cheer them on.  If any kindergarten buddies could attend, that would be great!
  • Red Ribbon Week: Our healthy eating unit will continue with a focus on how we can take care of our bodies: eat well, exercise and get rest.  We will talk about red ribbon week as a time when we focus on only putting GOOD THINGS into our bodies.  Please see the red ribbon week schedule below.

  • S is for “Sal”.  We will be meeting a new super kid next week.  His name is Sal.  Next week, Superkids has us focusing more on BLENDING…putting sounds together to make words!  We will be blending both two and three letter words and nonsense words.
  • We will add “my” and “did” to the word wall next week.  Current words are: a, do, go, I, like, no, see, to, the, we, will, yes.
  • Journaling: We will draw and label “s” words; we will begin to write sentences starting with “I see” and “I like” and will use writing center word cards to finish those sentences.
  • Daily phonemic awareness exercises
  • Fiction and nonfiction books about apples and nutrition; fiction books are written from the imagination.  Nonfiction books teach us about something.  We will begin to label our read alouds as fiction or nonfiction.
  • Shared writing continues!  We’re about halfway through our shared writing stories.  The format is: My name is…, I am __ years old, I like…, I do not like… We practice writing the words together. Each child has a chance to be the story leader.
  • Centers: word wall word work, superkids decodable readers, printable books focusing on word wall words, letter formation practice, blending practice and more1

Math: We will be wrapping up Chapter 3 and moving on to Chapter 4: Represent and Compare numbers to 10.

  • Tally marks: tallying numbers up 10 remembering to “make a bundle with 5” and “circle groups of ten”.
  • Number formation: I have no introduced ALL number poems.  Just a reminder, poems can be found Number Poems  It really helps the kids to form their numbers correctly.
  • Counting to 30: We are practicing counting to 20 and are being extra careful with “13, 14, 15”

We have introduced the “double ten frame” and are starting to show numbers 1-15.  We are learning that numbers 11-19 are, ” 1 group of ten with ___ ones left over”.  We are trying to become more automatic with recognizing numbers on a double ten frame.
  • Comparing numbers 1-15 and naming them as less than, greater than or equal to.
  • Counting by 10s.  We will begin to practice counting by 10s.
  • We will work with number pairs to make numbers 6-9; we will do this with counters.

At home:

1.) Practice counting by 1s to 40.

2.) Practice counting by 10s to 100.

3.) Start at a number other than 1 and say the next two numbers.  For example, “what comes after 8?”  “9, 10!”

4.) double ten frame mats: feel free to print and focus on representing teen numbers as a group of ten with ___ ones. You can use any small manipulatives or food (beads, cubes, m and ms, etc.)

Religion:

We will continue our unit on CREATION.  We will learn to see God in all things.  “Look at the beautiful red leaves on that tree! Thank you, God!” We illustrated our new pocket chart song this past week and will practice singing in next week in our poetry journals.  Ask your child to sing it at home!  Hint: God made flowers, God made trees, God made fishes in the seas.  God made sun, God made…….

Science:

We will continue our unit on healthy eating and will explore APPLES more next week.  Please have your child bring in an apple of his/her choice ON Wednesday, October 25. We will continue to study  “my plate” which shows us how to eat a healthy, balanced meal.  Keep sending in any food ads from the paper or pick some up from the grocery store. We will use those next week!
