This Week:

  • We have now gone through ALL of our safety drills–fire, lockdown, tornado and bus evacuation.  We will have one more fire drill next week with the fire department  present. The kids have done great!

At home:

High Frequency words:  I have introduced: NO, GO, THE, YES, WE, TO; Next week, I will introduce WILL. We are learning how to read and spell these words. AT HOME: Please keep the word wall I sent home  on Friday in a safe place. These are words I want the children to be able to spell and read.  These words have been placed on the “word wall” in our classroom.

Write the Room: Our write the room activity will now focus on SENTENCE WRITING!  Students will now write the sentences around the room: “I see the sun.” “I see the door.” “I see the clock.”  etc.  We are working on understanding letters make up words and words make up sentences!

Name writing: We will continue to focus on name writing; one capital, the rest lower case and we will pay attention to starting each letter at the correct line–plane line or sky line. AT HOME: Please use the name writing packet that I sent home to help your child practice his/her name.

Shared writing: We will continue shared writing.  Students follow along as we fill in in missing words or letters on chart paper to create a story about each child following this format: My name is___,  I am __ years old, I like ___, I do not like ____.

Math: We will FINISH module 3 which is all about match and counting numbers to 5. Your child will come home with this completed workbook (modules 1-3) in the next week or so. Aren’t they getting GREAT at writing their numbers!? I am so proud of them.  Remember, it’s okay if  your child writes a number backwards.  That will likely continue through kindergarten, very developmentally appropriate.  We will keep using our number poems to practice, practice, practice! We are also currently working on:

  • Tally marks: We are representing numbers using tally marks for 1-20! At home: using any writing utensil (pencil, marker, chalk, dry erase marker), give your child a number from 1-20 and ask your child to show you tally marks for that number.
  • Number formation:  I will introduce formation for 7-9 and then we will review 1-9.  At home: Click HERE for number poems (scroll down to page 34) and begin to practice 1-6.
  • Counting 1-20; At home: Practice counting by 1s from 1-20.  Many have mastered this, so go on from there!  The end goal for kindergarten is to count to 100 by 1s. I love doing this in the car….they’re trapped! 🙂  Have your child count.  Then go back and forth–you say 1, your child says 2…see how high you can get.  Practicing this at home is SO helpful and an easy one to do in the car, while laying in bed, while taking a bath, etc.
  • We have started to use the >,<, = signs to compare numbers.
  • Representing numbers 1-20 on a ten or double ten frame. We are really focusing on TEEN NUMBERS.  We want the students to recognize teen numbers as “a group of ten with ___ ones left  over.”  So, 17 is “1 group of 10 with 7 ones left over.”  We do A LOT of tallying, ten frame work and base 10 work so students get this concept down.  We want them having STRONG number sense before we get into addition and subtraction! AT HOME: print one double ten frame and practice using any small manipulatives (bingo chips, m and ms, cheerios, etc.)  https://stcletusschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/TenFrameWorkmatsFREEBIE.pdf

Religion:

  • We had a great first PBIS assembly!  Students were told they are going to work on earning blue “respectful tickets” over the next few weeks.  They are collecting these tickets in their pencil boxes.  In a few weeks, the PBIS store will open and the students will use these tickets/coupons to purchase a small item!  We are seeing lots of respectful behavior!  Be respectful, be responsible, be compassionate, be a CARDINAL!
  • Next week, we will begin our unit on BAPTISM.  When we were baptized, we became a part of another family, the church family!  On Wednesday, September 25, I am asking BOYS to bring in a baptism memento–a picture, candle, invitation, etc. to share with the class.  On Thursday, September 26th, I am asking the GIRLS to bring in a baptism memento to share with the class.  If your child was not baptized, no  worries, just bring in any kind of special religous memento that shows yours Please talk to your child about the following:
  • Did your child cry, laugh, smile, sleep during the baptism?
  • Who are your child’s Godparents?
  • Was there a special celebration?
  • Why did you choose to baptize your child?
