Third Grade News and Up coming Events

Third Grade News:

Religion:  This week the students will be completing the first chapter in our book as they review the terms and talk about how Jesus showed us different ways to follow him in our faith.

PLEASE remember that we attend 8:00am Mass on Tuesdays.  The doors to school are opened at 7:45 to give the students time to get to their classrooms to put their belongings on their desks and then head to Church with the rest of their class.  Please please sure to bring your child to school by or before 7:45 so that we can be on time for Mass.  Please encourage your child to use the washroom before coming to school as well.

Reading:  This week the students will be starting their second book in our reading series.  The name of the book is “The Case of the Gasping Garbage.”  This book contains  several short mystery stories that are solved by two scientist / detectives that are the same age as the students in our class.  As we read the book (you can find it on our GOOGLE CLASSROOM ~ Stream page so that the students can reread it at home.) the students will talk about characters and how their actions effect the out come of events in the story.  I hope you enjoy the story as you listen to your child read it out loud at home.

Spelling:  Spelling words were sent home on Friday September 10th to give the students the chance to start studying the words that they will be tested on on Friday September 17th.  During the week at school the students will be sorting the spelling words according to how the short u sound is spelled in the word (either with an o or a u), identify beginning sounds and segmenting them in to syllables.  Finally  they will use the words to complete analogies and make inferences.  The homework this week will be on Tuesday: Change a given word into one of the spelling words as they follow directions.  Thursday:  Handwriting the spelling words.  PLEASE go over the homework with your child and encourage them to use their BEST handwriting and follow all directions!!

Phonics:  We have completed the first unit in our phonics series.  During the unit we reviewed beginning, middle and ending sounds in words.  We learned the vowels that help both G and C make their soft and hard sounds.  This week in class the students will complete the chapter checkup, as well as a review and Unit 1 test.

Math:  The students will use rounding and compatible number strategies to estimate differences in subtraction problems.  They will also use number lines and the break apart strategy to solve two and three digit subtraction problems.  Tuesday and Wednesday nights there will be Math homework to complete and will be checked the following mornings.  PLEASE be sure that your child shoes their work and labels the answers.  The students should also complete Math Simple Solutions Lessons 13 to 16 by Friday the 17th.

Thursdays for Math Class the students work on their iReady Math Path.

Science: We will be looking at and learning about the tools a scientist uses to conduct experiments.
