To the Parents of Rooms 109 & 110:
Happy December! Finally, we’ve reached the month of Advent and the holiday season! This week, we are so excited to return from our Thanksgiving Break. We all began the week by writing in our journals about their delicious holiday dinners and fun family activities. After journaling, we gave the students an introduction to Advent. We also talked about the meaning of Advent, and what the weekly lighting of each candle means. We decorated and hung up our wreaths. On Wednesday, we colored some lovely pictures of baby Jesus. Later in the week, we completed a few structured lessons about Advent from our religion text, “We Believe”. The students were very curious and asked some very good questions.
In handwriting, we are busy moving through the alphabet. Both classes are working on the letter, “Nn”. We are having fun finding words that begin with “Nn” in every single book that we read. In spelling, we are getting ready for our spelling test on the long “o_e” words. We had a couple of spelling bees, and the students always enjoy the competition. We had a really fun spelling bee on Wednesday, and are working hard on learning all of our new spelling words and dictation sentences as well.
In Reading, we are looking forward to starting some new stories in Unit 2. We are reading stories in both “Sleuth” Magazine and our Text Collection of short stories. Our main reading text was “Time
to Sleep”, which was about how numerous animals sleep. It was a fun and interesting stories. We liked the different animals and imagined what it would be like to sleep like a bat, a flamingo, a horse, a monkey, and more. We’ve begun taking turn reading more books aloud in class, and our classmates enjoy hearing us read to them. Christmas books are really popular now! We are encouraging them to bring in more holiday-themed readers to share with the class.
In English, we are continuing to focus on writing complete sentences and identifying their parts. We’re also practicing labeling nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, and adverbs. We are still singing the jingles to help reinforce these reading skills.
In Math, we work in Go Math! and Simple Solutions. We are review ways to make 8, 9, and 10 as well as writing about the rules of addition. We also are introducing the concept of subtraction and looking at examples of vertical subtraction with rounding. We enjoy participating as a class in the interactive smartboard lessons, read aloud, and making corrections to our work. In an effort to ready our classrooms for winter and Christmas, we will be completing a series of holiday crafts throughout the month. This week, we made some winter snowflakes and sweet candy canes. We are looking forward to all of the Christmas Festivities coming up this season! Just a final, gentle reminder: Please remind your child to wear warm socks, a hat, mittens, a scarf, and a heavy coat.
