Week#22: Valentines Day Party To All!

To the Parents of Rooms 109 & 110:

Happy Valentines Day! We had such a wonderful week celebrating St. Valentine and all the sweethearts of the world. The room mothers did a fantastic job with providing games and fun activities for the kids. There was definitely a feeling of “love” in the air with everyone enjoying the day.

In handwriting, we are busy moving through the alphabet. Room 110 finished “Ww” this week. Room 109 did “Vv” for Valentine’s Day. In spelling, we just finished the “ow” pattern. Our pattern for the upcoming week will be “ew.” We have been doing spelling bees a few times a week. The children love practicing words from all of our previous units, plus new sight words. The spirit of competition is alive and well in first grade.

In Reading, we are enjoying reading and discussing “The Recess Queen.” It is a story about bullying, and how the bully is really very lonely. We are discussing it at great length, and the children have a lot of perspective on why bullies

act the way they do. They also learned how an act of kindness turned the bully around. We are also working on book reports in Reading. The children love sharing books they have read. Some children have even brought the book to class and shared their favorite part of the story. It is so wonderful to see children wanting to learn to read, and enjoying their books as they learn. Luckily, we order from Scholastic books and have wonderful libraries to take books from.

In English, we are continuing to focus on writing complete sentences and identifying their parts. We’re also practicing labeling nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, and adverbs. We are still singing the jingles to help reinforce these reading skills.

In Math, we work in Go Math! and Simple Solutions. We are working on adding doubles, doubles plus one, and doubles minus one. In Simple Solutions we learn a little bit of everything. The students enjoy coming to the Smartboard to correct the Simple Solutions problem and discuss new math concepts they are learning.

In Science, we have been learning about human-made materials, natural materials, and both. It is interesting to see what everyday materials are made of. We also have good science discussions as some children are really knowledgeable and are eager to share their knowledge.
