What We’re Learning in Language Arts

This Week in Ms. Dusek’s Language Arts

8th grade:
Eighth grade students will complete their first draft of their This I Believe Narrative for Monday September 16. Then over the next week, we will complete several revision activities designed to help improve student drafts. These activities focus on adding sensory language, integrating dialogue, and refining word choice. Once the eighth graders have finalized their drafts, they will convert their written narratives into short multimedia films, including graphics and audio. I look forward to sharing these projects with you soon! Students will also continue working on the vocabulary concepts introduced in unit 2 of their Vocabulary Workshop book, which they will be tested on next week.

7th grade:
This past week, seventh grade completed rough drafts for their This I Believe narratives. Next week, we will begin revising these drafts to include sensory details, MLA formatting, and specific word choice.  At the end of the unit, seventh graders will host a “This I Believe” event where they will have the opportunity to volunteer to share their work aloud with the class.  Students will also continue working on the vocabulary concepts introduced in unit 2 of their Vocabulary Workshop book, which they will be tested on next week.

6th grade:
On Tuesday, sixth graders will complete the rough draft for their first major writing project, a narrative essay or personal story. They have been encouraged by not limited to write about a “guardian angel” in their life or someone who has helped or inspired them. Over the next week, we will engage in several revision activities designed to help improve student drafts, such as integrating sensory details, refining word choice, and drafting in complete sentences. Students will also continue working on the vocabulary concepts introduced in unit 2 of their Vocabulary Workshop book, which they will be tested on next week.
