11/4: News From Fifth

Hello 5th grade parents and families,

Happy November! Trimester 1 is quickly coming to a close. Read on to find out more!

Social Studies: Students have been learning about Vikings, Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas. They have been taking a look into their cultures, beliefs, developments, and demises.

Science: Our fifth grade classes really showed out with their plant and animal cell models! They have learned about the functions of cell parts, as well as how cells, tissues, and organs work together. We are now learning about how our bodies move, breathe, circulate blood, digest food, remove waste, and send messages.

Grammar/Writing: Some things we have been reviewing in grammar include prepositions and other parts of speech, as well as creating paragraphs with varied sentences. Students have been learning and using editing marks to edit their own work and work of their peers.

Reading: Our current novel, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler has us on the edge of our seats wondering who created the angel statue that has captured everyone’s attention. Throughout the novel, we have focused on vocabulary, comprehension, character development, and annotating our reading.

Religion: We have spent some time learning all about the Celebration of the Eucharist and all its parts. We will be moving on to an in-depth look at the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.

Spelling: Our next spelling unit covers words with the final schwa + n such as in the word “citizen” and final schwa + r as in the word “governor.” The following unit covers words with an r-controlled vowel such as in the word “perfume.” For both units, students will focus on reading, writing, spelling, and defining words correctly.

It’s a great day to be a Cardinal!
