9/9: News from 5th

Hello 5th grade parents and families! It is September and we are officially in the swing of things. Here are some things we have been working on, and some things to look forward to:

Social Studies: Students have been reviewing the 5 themes of Geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. Thank you Mrs. Varchetta for a great start to the year- and welcome Mrs. Kennedy!

Science: We are continuing our unit about how Scientists work, including learning through experiments and observations. Students are learning about different careers in Science, and types of investigations.

Grammar: We are having a blast with our jingles about the different parts of speech and forming a complete sentence. Ask your fifth grader to sing some of them for you!

Reading: Our first novel of the year, Night of the Spadefoot Toads, has really captured our interest. We have worked on comparing characters, citing text evidence, using sensory details, determining point of view, understanding plot, sequencing events, and much more. We will continue to have group discussions as we work through the text.

Religion: Having completed our first We Believe chapter of the year, students have learned about Jesus’ ministry, and discussed ways that we can follow His example and lead a life acceptable to the Lord. We have discussed ways to be caring, forgiving, and just- and how our actions can grow the Kingdom of God like a mustard seed! As we proceed with our We Believe curriculum, we will have an overview of the sacraments before looking closely at each one.

A very exciting update is that fifth grade will be leading our Grandfriends’ Mass, taking place Wednesday, September 22, 2022.

Spelling: Our next spelling unit continues the theme of long vowels, this time focusing on the long /i/and long /o/. Students will read, spell, write, and define words with the long i sound spelled y, i-consonant-e, or i; they will do the same with words with the long o sound spelled o-consonant-e, ow, or o. Students will demonstrate understanding of spelling words by completing analogies and by inserting spelling words into the correct sentence using context clues.

Don’t forget:

Monday, 9/12/22 is Patriotic dress down day- wear red, white, and blue.

Tuesday, 9/13/22 is D4D Mak’s House in La Grange.

Friday, 9/16/22 is a spirit wear dress down day.

Thursday, 9/22/22 is Grandfriend’s Mass.

Friday, 9/23/22 is a staff development day- no school for students.

It’s a great day to be a Cardinal! Have a great weekend!
