Hello 5th grade parents and families,
Happy Fall! We hope you have been soaking up the sunshine while it lasts. Our classes have been enjoying this exciting time of year, so please read on for a peek into what we’ve been up to.
Social Studies: Students are currently working on the learning standard “Collect, analyze, and interpret information such as latitude and
longitude from maps.” They have been studying latitude and longitude, and they have also been enjoying reading TIME magazines this year!
Science: Our first unit, “What is Science?”is quickly wrapping up. Students learned that there are many methods used to investigate phenomena, and they have compared various forms of investigations. Other objectives that we will be working on in the coming weeks are demonstrating proper and safe use of science tools, explaining the importance of accuracy in measurements, and demonstrating the ability to use numbers and measure.
Grammar/ELA: Using our Shurley English textbooks, students have been identifying subject nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and articles. Students are also working on identifying types of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory.
Reading: Night of the Spadefoot Toads has taken us on a wild ride as we read and infer how Ben and Mrs. Tibbetts will handle the impending destruction of the vernal pool where the Spadefoots live. Students have been: analyzing how characters respond to challenges; explaining how a series of scenes fits together to provide structure to a story; and comparing and contrasting characters. We are also emphasizing the meanings of various kinds of figurative language.
Religion: Our fifth graders did FANTASTIC job preparing and leading our Grandfriends’ Mass which took place this afternoon, Thursday September 22nd. It is heartwarming to see how enthusiastic the students are about serving at Church. Parents, Grandfriends, and students should all be proud! We have also been continuing to learn about the seven sacraments. We’ve completed a broad overview of all the sacraments, and have started taking a closer look at each one, beginning with the Sacrament of Baptism. Up next: the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Spelling: Our next spelling units cover the vowel sounds oo, yoo, and ô. In unit 3, students will read, spell, write, and define words with the oo sound spelled ui, o-consonant-e, u-consonant-e, or ue; and with words with the yoo sound spelled u, u-consonant-e, or eau. In unit 4, they will read, spell, write, and define words with the ô sound spelled o, oa, au, aw, or a followed by l. In both units, students will demonstrate understanding of spelling words by completing analogies and by inserting spelling words into the correct sentence using context clues.

Friday, 9/23/22 is a staff development day- no school for students.
Saturday 9/24/22 is the St. Cletus pig roast from 6:15 pm-8:00 pm. Mum sales deliveries take place this Saturday, as well.
