March is BUSY! Now, what has 5th grade learned lately? Let’s dive in.
ELA: The students have finished up their Opinion Writing pieces and we have started our Research Paper Project! All that we have tackled so far is the topics and had an overview of reliable sources. Please reinforce to your children that ChatGPT is not a reliable source of information at all. I know it’s tempting, but we have to use our brains!! I will send a schedule of due dates for the research project and post them online.
Science: To conclude our Food Web unit, the students made food webs of an ecosystem of their choice. I loved seeing the variety of ecosystems and organisms. Take a look at Parent Teacher conferences, I will have them displayed! Next up, we will investigate the Earth’s systems (think biosphere, atmosphere, etc).
Math: We are working on benchmarking and estimating fractions, which is going so well. Some students still need some practice with making equivalent fractions, but I see they are working hard. I usually host math help during lunch; please encourage your child to come to these sessions or reach out to me and I can provide extra support. We will continue to work with fractions, then move on to VOLUME!
Religion: This Lenten season, we are focusing on the Sacraments of Healing. We will also “host” Stations of the Cross on March 20th at 2:30 with Miss Pretzie’s class. Please join us!
Reading: To conclude our latest novel, Number the Stars, I split the class up into groups and they worked on a character analysis. They did an excellent job delegating and helping each other out referencing the book. Their projects will be displayed in the hallways outside for conferences as well. Our next book is The Little Prince!
For social studies updates, head on over to Miss Pretzie’s classroom page and see what’s going on! Thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead.
