Tales of Everything Happening in Third Grade Room 114: February 12th to the 16th

Hello Third Grade Families:

AUCTION ITEM SNOW ANGEL PICTURE:    Thank you to the parents that were able to take a picture of your child making a snow angel and shared it with me.  If you did not get a chance to take the picture not to worry please take a picture of your child wearing their snow gear standing with a sled or holding a shovel as if they are going out to play.

Valentine Day Celebration:  This year Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fall on the same day so I decided to have our class party on Tuesday (Fat Tuesday).  Anthony Delsino’s mom (our room mom) has organized a pizza lunch for the students on Tuesday and the kids will watch a movie and do a craft and play some games in the afternoon.  The students were also asked to create a box to collect their valentine’s in.  These boxes should be brought to school on either Monday or Tuesday of this week.  The students will pass out Valentine’s on Tuesday as well.  Students are welcome to bring in treats for their friends.  Please do not put each student’s name on the Valentine’s cards this makes passing out cards a lot easier and quicker.  We have 18 students in class this year.

Our project for February will be a scrapbook about a President.  The directions and the blank book for these scrapbooks were sent home on Monday February 5th.  The Presidential scrapbook will be due on February 25th.

February prayer and poems:  The prayer for February will be recited this Thursday February 15th.  The poems will be performed on Thursday February 22nd.  I look forward to seeing the creativity the students will use as they perform their chosen poems.  Please encourage your child to add gestures, simple props and costumes to their presentations.

Religion:  This week the students will continue learning about the four marks of the Church.  These marks are One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.  The students have learn the meaning of these four words: Bishops, Dioceses, Pope, Marks of the Church and how they relate to our faith.  The students will learn the importance of making and keeping a Lenten Promise.  We will be attending Mass on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week please join us if your schedule allows.   This Friday we will begin attending the Stations of the Cross at 2:30.  Please join us for these as well it is a wonderful way to end the week.

Reading:  This week the class will be reading the story “Grandma’s Secret.”  As we are reading the passage the students will talk about the three different parts of stories (Beginning, Middle and End).  The class will define unfamiliar words and answer questions as they use the close reading strategy.

Spelling:  This week’s words are a review of Units 13 to 17.  As we work with these words, the students will review skills learned in the units.

Phonics: The class will learn to add these suffixes -ion, -ment, -en, -able, and -ible to the end of base words.  As the students add these suffixes they will learn the meaning they bring to the word.

Math:   The class will finish working with Chapter 12 this week.

Social Studies:  We began a unit about community and culture last week.  The students learned about the Chinese LUNAR NEW YEAR also known as the LANTERN FESTIVAL.  This special date for the Chinese starts on February 10 and last for fifteen days.  This week we will learn about the celebration of Mardi Gras.
