Tales of Everything Happening in Third Grade Room 114: February 19th to the 23rd

Hello Third Grade Families:

AUCTION ITEM SNOW ANGEL PICTURE:    Thank you to the parents that were able to take a picture of your child making a snow angel and shared it with me.  If you did not get a chance to take the picture not to worry please take a picture of your child wearing their snow gear standing with a sled or holding a shovel as if they are going out to play.  

Our February Project a scrapbook about a President are due on Friday February 23rd.  Presidential Scrapbook Presentations will begin on Friday as well.

February prayer and poems:  The poems will be performed on Thursday February 22nd.  I look forward to seeing the creativity the students will use as they perform their chosen poems.  Please encourage your child to add gestures, simple props and costumes to their presentations.

Religion:     The class will begin a chapter about being part of a Church family and what it means in our faith.  We will begin our series “Growing With God” next Monday February 26th.  The series will be during our Religion classes on the following dates in February and March:  2/26, 2/28, 3.4, 3/6, 3/11/ 3/ 13, and ending on 3/18.  This series will have our class talking about the following topics:  God Creates Us, Boundaries, Friendship and Bullying, Safety Awareness, Digital Discipleship, My Sacred Self and Trust and Secrets.  The Growing with God Series will be held.   You will receive a hard copy of the schedule of topics on Tuesday February 20th in your child’s homework folder.  You will also find a copy of an OPT out letter.  If you would rather your child not take part in these classes, please return the filled out letter by Friday February 23rd.  This Friday we will again attend the Stations of the Cross at 2:30.  Please join us for these as well it is a wonderful way to end the week.  If you are attending Stations of the Cross on Friday please let me know if you would like your child to bring their things with them to Church so that you can leave right after Stations.

Reading:  This week the class will be reading the story “Paul Bunyan and the Flapjacks.”  As we are reading the passage the students will talk about the three different parts of stories (Beginning, Middle and End).  The class will define unfamiliar words and answer questions as they use the close reading strategy.

Spelling:  This week’s words contain the /o/ sound spelled with aw as in draw, lawn, dawn, crawl, straw, raw, and law.   Or o as in cost, across, belong, cross, soft, song, boss, and lost.   

Phonics: The class will review how to add suffixes and endings to the end of base words.  As the students add the suffixes they will also review the new meanings they bring to the word.  

Math:   The class will begin working on Chapter 5 this week.  Chapter Five has the class Identifying and describing number patterns
shown in a function table,  solving multiplication problems by using the strategy draw a diagram and using an array or a multiplication table to find an unknown factor.  As the students strengthen their multiplication skills, they will also learn the meanings of these vocabulary words:   pattern, equation, array, Commutative Property of Multiplication, factor, product and Distributive Property.  

Social Studies:  We will continue the unit about community and culture this week.  The students will read about the reasons people move from one town or state to another as well as to another country.  As we read about moving from place to place the students will learn about these key terms: immigrant, custom and ethnic groups

My name is Lisa Gearen. I started teaching at St. Cletus in 2003. I taught first grade for 14 years and now teach 3rd. I have a bachelors degree in Communication and a Masters in Elementary Education. I received both degrees from Concordia University. I also have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education as well as being a Certified Catechist.
