Tales of Everything Happening in Third Grade Room 114: February 5th to the 9th

Hello Third Grade Families:

We had an exciting Catholic School Week!!  Thanks to all of you who helped with the events that were scheduled during the week.  Thank you to those families that came to open house it was fun to see you all.

The students did an AMAZING job on their Changes in Technology projects with both their posters and presentations.  Very proud of all of them.  Our project for February will be a scrapbook about a President.  The directions and the blank book for these scrapbooks will be sent home on Monday February 5th.  The Presidential scrapbook will be due on February 25th.

February prayer and poems were sent home on Thursday February 1st.  The prayer for February will be recited on Thursday February 15th.  The poems will be performed on Thursday February 22nd.  I look forward to seeing the creativity the students will use as they perform their chosen poems.  Please encourage your child to add gestures, simple props and costumes to their presentations.

Religion:  This week the students will be learning about the four marks of the Church.  These marks are One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.  The students will also learn the meaning of these four words: Bishops, Dioceses, Pope, Marks of the Church and how they relate to our faith.

Reading:  This week the class will be reading the story “Grandma’s Secret.”  As we are reading the passage the students will talk about the three different parts of stories (Beginning, Middle and End).  The class will define unfamiliar words and answer questions as they use the close reading strategy.

Spelling:  This week’s words are ones that are commonly used by writers.  They are also frequently misspelled even by the best spellers.

Phonics: The class will continue to work with adding the suffixes -er, -est, and the endings -ed and -ing to word they dropped the final -e or changed the -y to an i.  The students have also been doubling the final consonants to add these endings in order to keep the short vowel sounds in words.  This week we will start adding suffixes -less, -ness, -ly, -y and -ful to the end of base words.

Math:   The class will practice classifying plane shapes as they look at their different characteristics.  We will also be learning to use a venn diagram to sort the shapes.
