Tales of Everything Third Grade

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you are all having a great weekend!!

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to come with us the FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN.  We had such a great time and were able to pack 118 boxes during our trip.  These 118 boxes held 25,488 meals.  They will feed kids daily for a year.  The cost of these meals was $7,391.52.  GREAT JOB THIRD and FOURTH GRADERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t forget to send in your permission slips and money for our Nutcracker Fieldtrip on December 4th.

The Third Grade Class is preparing to host a Thanksgiving Prayer Service to be held on November 21st at 9:30 in the Church.  All Students will be participating in the service.  Some students will have speaking parts, others will have a sign to carry to the altar at the beginning of the service and hold up during a time of reflection during the service.  While still others will be in the choir.  Please add the date to your calendars and ask your child what part they have for the service.

Religion:  The class will continue talking about the fact that Jesus has power over life and death.  We will also be learning about the LAST JUDGEMENT at the end of the world.

Reading:  The students will be working on identifying the time, setting, and main characters in  stories that come from iReady.  As they work through these stories they are also improving their comprehension skills.  I will be giving the directions for the December book reports at parent teacher conferences on November 21st.  The book report will require the students to read a Christmas chapter (NO GRAPHIC NOVELS) book.  I will have a list of chapter books that are acceptable for the reports.  Book reports will be due on Monday December 18th.

Spelling:  Our words this week will have the LONG I sound spelled usingor igh.

Phonics:  The students will be working with both consonant blends and digraphs this week.

Math: Students will be introduced to the distributive property of multiplication this week as they learn to break a bigger factor into two smaller ones.  They will then multiply the two smaller numbers by the factor that represents the number of groups.  After doing the multiplication steps, they will then all the two products to get the larger product.  Example:  4X7 = (4, 2, 5)  (4 x2) + (4×5) = 8 + 20 = 28.

Science:  The students will continue working with the steps for conducting experiments.  Last week the third graders used their sense of sight to observe the effects of different liquids on raisins.  The class used four variables in their experiments and they were: clear water, Mountain Dew, Both Regular and Diet Coke, and Apple Juice.  As you can imagine MOUNTAIN DEW was the clear winner in the dance contest.  Before the experiments took place the students made hypothesis about the effects and then recorded their findings to share with the rest of the class.
