Tales of the Third Grade Everything

Hello Everyone!

I hope you have had a great weekend!!  Hard to believe that Christmas is two weeks away.  The students will be cleaning out their desks for the holiday break.  Please find an old backpack or reusable grocery bag and send it in by Thursday December 21st so that you child can put their supplies in them for the break.  If you will be taking off for a holiday vacation before the 21sr PLEASE send the backpack to school earlier.  

Here are some dates to be aware of for the coming week.

Monday, December 11th:  One week until December Book Reports are due.  Please let me know if you need any supplies sent home to help create the projects.  D4D at Portillos in Summit.  Enjoy their yummy food and mention that you are a St. Cletus Family.

Tuesday, December 12th:  Join us for Mass if your schedule allows.  

Thursday, December 14thAll School Christmas Concert at 7:00  Please join us and have your child come to school in festive Christmas clothes.     Students MUST arrive in church by 6:40pm – all coats stay with families.  Please let us know if you will not be able to attend the concert.  

Friday, December 15th  Ugly Christmas sweater (Yes you can wear an ugly t-shirt, or sweat shirt too!) dress down day.  

During the school day this week we will be learning:

ReligionThe class will be completing Chapter 5 this week. If the weather is nice this week the class will take around the campus and learn about the statues that are displayed.  

Reading:  The students will be reading about the history of Christmas Lights.  During the week we will be reading an informational passage, highlighting unfamiliar words and answering in depth questions centered around the reading. 

Spelling:  Our words this week contain these consonant digraphs:  ch, sh, tch, th, wr, ck. 

Phonic:     This week the students will review the sounds vowels make when they are paired with r’s in words.  

Math:  This week the students will review the concepts taught in Chapter four.  They will work on problems using the associative and distributive properties of multiplication.  They will also practice filling in tables and charts using multiplication strategies learned throughout the chapter.  The class will take the chapter test next week.

Social Studies:  This week we will start reading informational texts that talk about Christmas around the world.  Our first stop will be the United States.

My name is Lisa Gearen. I started teaching at St. Cletus in 2003. I taught first grade for 14 years and now teach 3rd. I have a bachelors degree in Communication and a Masters in Elementary Education. I received both degrees from Concordia University. I also have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education as well as being a Certified Catechist.
