5th Grade News

Happy Thursday, all! We are just about to get into Spring Break (hooray!), but before that we have LOADS of fun stuff to cover. Let’s start with some important dates and items to remember:

There will be no chess club next week.

April 11: Living Stations of the Cross begin at 2pm. Please join us at 2pm in the church.

April 13: Pancake Breakfast. If you have not signed up and would be interested in volunteering, please do so here.

April 15: we will be doing the readings in church. Please send your child to school in their uniform, even if they are a backup. They will be able to change into their PE uniforms after mass.

April 16: Permission slips and money for our May 1st field trip are due. Chaperones have been selected, thank you for your interest!!

April 17: There is a Washing of the Feet prayer at 9:30am. We will dismiss at 2pm! There is no aftercare.  Please send your child to school this day with a sturdy bag. They will place their books in it so we can deep clean the rooms. Happy Spring Break!!

April 28: School resumes.

Here’s what we’ve been learning!

ELA: We have been practicing our parts of speech and took a test on root words, prefixes, and suffixes. We will soon begin our unit on compound words.

Science: Our unit on food webs and how energy is transferred from the sun to producer to consumer to decomposer is complete! Our next unit is all about how organisms interact and adapt to their ecosystem. This should align wonderfully with our field trip to the Shedd Aquarium!!

Social Studies: The revolution will not be televised, because it’s 1775 and there is no TV. We just took a test on the causes of the American Revolution, which will then lead us to meet some of the key characters of this time.

Reading: We are about halfway through Holes. We take a quiz on the chapters we read every week! The students love this book and we have a great time discussing and debating characters’ decisions, what we would do in their places, and making predictions. Every lesson we have a skill (making inferences, making connections with the book to our lives, and making predictions) and a new vocabulary word to master.

i-Ready: 5th grade making excellent progress in their studies!! Our last diagnostic of the year will be in May. They are working so hard, keeping track of their personal and whole class progress.

Religion: We are finishing up another lesson on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Soon, we will begin our Growing with God lessons. A parent letter will be sent out soon.
