Hello all and happy Friday! If I have my dates correct, this is the second to last newsletter of the year. Goodness! Okay, let’s get down to important information:
May 20th is McTeacher night at the McDonald’s in Countryside (5701 LaGrange Road). I will be there allegedly working the ice cream machine from 5-6pm, although I have on good authority that this machine does work most of the time. Twenty percent of all food sales go to St. Cletus and 100% of the apple pie sales to go us! Bring cash for the pies. The event ends at 7pm, I hope to see you there!
May 22nd is another $1 dress down day for the American Heart Association. Your child can wear red, white, and blue to support the cause!
2pm dismissal on May 23rd (no aftercare)! No school on May 26th, which is Memorial Day.
Now what has 5th grade learned in the last couple of weeks? Let’s go.
ELA: ROOTS!!! The students know how much I love roots and prefixes, and I try to sneak root word lessons in as many subjects as I can (ask them what biotic vs abiotic means). We learned the root words mit, miss, and fact recently as well! We’ve also continued our Writing Wednesdays, which are a hit.
Science: We are continuing to learn about ecosystems and how living and nonliving things interact. We have a fun project that will be due Wednesday, which is a triorama! Students will research 3 different ecosystems, naming the biotic and abiotic factors, characteristics, and the organisms that inhabit the ecosystems.
Social Studies: I introduced the students to Liberty’s Kids, which was a wonderful show from the early aughts. We just went over the Articles of Confederation and learned about why it wasn’t the perfect system of laws for a new nation.
Reading: We have finished Holes! Overall, I think the students really loved the book. We will have a test on Thursday and then we will celebrate on Friday by watching the movie! Rumor has it that there will be themed snacks… To finish the year, we will read some short stories and continue to explore themes, sequencing, problems and solutions, and more!
Religion: We are currently learning about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. In our Growing with God lessons, we finished up a lesson on friendship and bullying, and why it is important to be inclusive even when it may seem difficult.
