Happy Friday all and welcome to another edition of 5th Grade News. Today is February 28th! Before we get into what we’ve been doing in the classroom, let’s get into some important dates to remember:
March 5: Ash Wednesday Mass
March 6th: The Cat in the Hat Day: Wear stripes and your favorite hat!
March 7: Sleep Book Day: Wear your favorite PJ!
March 13: Parent Teacher Conferences. There will be an early dismissal at 11am.
March 14: No school!
March 17: Green Dress Down Day!
Here’s what we’ve been learning in 5th grade:
ELA: Our favorite day for ELA is Wednesday! We have started having “Writing Wednesday” and we use a platform called WeWillWrite. There are several prompts, and the students are put into teams. They love it, and I love seeing their creativity.
Science: Our next lesson is all about food webs and food chains. How does the availability of food affect the population of animals? What role does a decomposer play in the food chain?! All shall be answered. We will also follow the Mammal March Madness throughout the month and fill out brackets! They did this last year and since it lines up nicely with our science lesson on animals, it’s perfect!
Social Studies: We are going to finish up our Mars Colony Project. We’ve had a couple of setbacks due to illnesses and other disruptions, but I promise we WILL finish this. They have done an amazing job so far. Then, we will get more into the American Revolution.
Religion: We’ve finished our lesson on sacramentals, their importance in Catholic rituals, and why we pray daily. Our next lesson is all about Reconciliation and the importance of seeking forgiveness.
Reading: Instead of a test, the students are working on a final project to show their understand the book and its message. There are several options: they can write an extra chapter of the book, create a diorama, create a Danish Resistance poster, etc. All projects require a short essay explaining their project. All information is available on Google Classroom under the Reading tab.
Spelling: Due to an error on my part, the spelling test will be next Wednesday, March 5th! Then we will return to weekly tests on Friday.
