Happy “First Day of Spring.” It’s allegedly spring, but when we wake up to fresh snow, I start to doubt that winter will ever end. Anyway, let’s get into some news and updates.
Important dates to remember:
March 24 and 28th: Please send your child to school in sneakers or with a pair of sneakers. Starting this Monday and Friday until Spring Break, 5th grade will have extra gym time instead of recess. They may wear gym shoes the whole day. I will send out a reminder when this has ended.
March 25-27 – Book Fair! We will browse on Tuesday and shop Wednesday and Thursday. The fair is also open after school on Wednesday.
March 28: Auction Shirt Dress Down Day!
April 4: 5th grade will run the Stations of the Cross. Please come join us! It will be at 2:30pm.
April 13th: Pancake Breakfast. An email was sent out, please join us and volunteer!
Now here’s what we’ve been learning:
ELA: Writing Wednesday is still a hit! Everyone’s skills are improving so much and I am so proud of them. We continue to have spelling tests and even with these more challenging words, the students are doing so well! We will have a Phonics test next week.
Science: We are diving deep into food chains, food webs, scavengers, decomposers, producers, and consumers. I’m sure you saw some of the students’ food webs in the hallway at Parent Teacher Conferences. We are also discovering how eliminating one part of a food web, no matter how small, can cause other organisms to suffer. We will have a quiz on this soon, and then a test on all of unit 3!
Social Studies: Our main topic right now is the French and Indian War. We have paused our Martian Colony game for the moment, but there is a reason. The colony game will continue to follow our studies. Once we get to the Revolution our colonies will be ready to gain independence!
Reading: We are starting our new book, Holes and it’s been a great read so far. We have discussed topics like irony, destiny, crime, justice, and many other topics. We have a quiz on Friday on chapters 1-6. Students also have a new red folder to hold all of their items for the rest of the school year, so please keep this safe.
Religion: We are finishing up our first chapter on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, and what perfect timing since it is Lent! We have learned the importance of seeking forgiveness, being truly sorry for our sins, and understanding how sin affects the whole Church community.
i-Ready: We have not only achieved our 100 lessons passed at 80%+ in Reading, but also in MATH. Oh, and not just one time, but TWO TIMES ALREADY! I am so proud of them, they are really working very hard. More rewards to come, I know it! Students also have individual charts and when they completely fill one out, they should bring it home and show it off.
