Ms. Skinner’s Fifth Grade News

Hello all! Can you believe it’s the last week of the first trimester? WILD. I also want to thank everyone who helped with Halloween, whether you handed out candy at Trunk or Treat, donated supplies and snacks, or helped at the party. It meant so much and we had a blast!

Let’s get into some important dates before we recap the last week of school:

November 10: Mrs. Fields fundraiser cookie orders are due!

November 13: All extra credit and missing work must be turned in.

November 14: Trimester 1 ends.

November 25: Parent-Teacher Conferences!

So, what has been going on in our room? What have our big brains absorbed? Let’s see:

ELA: Our new project is a fictional narrative story. I gave the students a worksheet that had them roll a die for characters, settings, and the problem that the characters have to solve. The first “story map” of the narrative is due on Monday. BIG NEWS: we have learned 100 VOCABULARY WORDS!!!!! Next week, we will be working on vocabulary projects and have a test the following week on those 100 words. I’ve noticed that a lot of students are using these words in their own vocabulary and I love it. Keep it up!

Science: We are about to wrap up our lesson on chemical versus physical changes. Last week, we had a “mini elephant’s toothpaste” lab and yesterday we had another lab to show off a chemical change. We mixed baking soda and water, dipped a q-tip into that mixture, and drew on paper. After the water evaporated, we rubbed blackberries on the paper to reveal a message. It was so fun seeing the chemical reactions in real time. Some of the experiments didn’t work, but that is okay! This is an easy one to try at home, I would love to know if other fruits work.

Math: AREA MODELS! We are working so hard on understanding how to divide using 2-digit divisors. I sent all of the parents a video on how to understand area models and I hope it’s helpful. Next week, we will have a quiz on using area models. I think we are starting to really get it after a lot of hard work.

Reading: We are about halfway through The Witch of Blackbird Pond, which is a great story about personal identity and personal choices. Every few chapters, I give out vocabulary words and definitions that students might find challenging. I have picked those words for our Word of the Day, and I am impressed how the students are using these words in class!

Religion: This week, we finished our overview of the Sacraments, and the categories of Sacraments. Next week, we will start our studies into Baptism, which is the foundation of our Catholic life! If anyone has a Baptism photo that they would like to share and bring to class, I would love to see it. I am also so impressed by the sincerity that the students bring to this class-they are thoughtful in prayer and ask wonderful questions.

Social Studies: Go on over to Miss Pretzie’s page to see what they’re learning about!
