CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE
Dear St Cletus School Families, In the spirit of a meaningful Advent season, our Advent project will be to prepare Christmas grocery cards for needy families in the LaGrange area. Each child is asked to contribute a monetary donation of $1.00-$5.00 to go toward the purchase of grocery gift cards for each family in the Giving Tree program. The students are asked to bring their donation to school Thursday, December 4 –Thursday, December 11. If your student or family is looking for a meaningful and helpful volunteer opportunity, please consider joining us for Giving Tree or choosing a tag off of one of our trees. Math- We are continuing working on decimal operations. We have practiced all week and on Monday we will move on to division. Division will be a little trickery and we will be practicing a lot before our next module test.
ELA- We having been working hard on our grammar skills and continue finding grammar mistakes in different 5 part stories. We wrote a fun Thanksgiving creative story this past week. It was fun seeing what all the students wrote about this fun creative writing assignment. We have been working hard on our vocabulary words. We took our second vocabulary test for the second trimester. I am so impressed with these kids! Everyone scored an 80% or higher on this vocabulary test! You can tell the students are really trying their best this trimester with vocab. The students are also required to write a journal every morning. They have a specific time allotted for journal and will be graded on their work at the end of the trimester, I suggest asking your students to go through and check their journals
6th Literature- We have been reading the short story “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl. The students are really working to notice all the foreshadowing in this story! This story always gets the students interested and wanting to know what happens at the end. We will be reading a story called “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, as well as, a few Christmas short stories.
7th Literature- This week for 7th grade, we read “The Cask of Amontillado”. It was so fun hearing all their theories as to why Montresor was leading Fortunato away. Once finished we started reading the play “Monster on Maple Street”. The students are assigned different roles each day to read. It is fun hearing the students read all the different parts. Once we finish, we will look at the way tone and mood affects both of these stories.
8th Literature- We are so close to finishing “The Hunger Games”. As we finish reading this book, we are having conversations about what is happening and understanding the different themes presented. We will have our novel test next week on Friday. The students will receive a study guide that we will go over in class. IF they study and read the book, they should do great.
Junior High Class Model:
Along with various specials teachers, students will be switching for Social Studies (Mrs. Van Wyck), Science (Ms. Fogle) and Religion (Mr. Ochoa) throughout the week. This gives students a feel for switching courses and having many different teachers and teacher expectations as they prepare for high school.
