Welcome back! Before we recap the last couple of weeks, there are some important dates and announcements that I want to pass along.
Grandfriends Mass: Here is the RSVP for September 25th. Please add a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or any other friend in your child’s life. The Mass will take place at 1:15pm, followed by a reception in the PC.
September 26th: No school! Teachers will be attending professional development classes.
September 28: Family Mass – 10:30am
October 1: Picture Day!
Now, what have our fifth graders learned in the last couple of weeks? Here we go…
ELA: We assessed our knowledge of nouns, subjects, verbs, and predicates! Next week, we will work on solidifying our knowledge of complete sentences: what makes them complete, what is a fragment, and what do we need to make a complete sentence. We have also started our Personal Narrative Project. We will approach this project in chunks, starting with brainstorming! Next week, we will work on our first drafts.
Math: Ask your child about the powers of 10 and exponents! I love working with these problems and the students are grasping it well. We have found missing exponents and multiplied using exponents! Next week, we will focus on multiplying numbers and regrouping. Parents, we might run into some different math here and I am here to help support you too.
Religion: We are learning about the differences between the Apostles and disciples, and what it means to grow the Kingdom of God here on Earth. Next week, we will begin to understand the Paschal Mystery, evangelization, and the types of Works of Mercy. We will also continue Bible Study, which gives us some time to reflect on the stories and parables in the Bible.
Reading: The class is just over halfway through George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt! Will George, Annie, and Emmett save the planet? Are there aliens?? Stay tuned! Just a note, every Friday the students will have a quiz on the chapters that we have read during the week. As with every quiz or test, they can make corrections to earn 1/2 of the points back.
Science: We have wrapped up our lessons on the Particle Nature of Matter. Next week, we will explore the Law of the Conservation of Matter! This next lesson has a really exciting lab that I think everyone will love. Hopefully we can have it next week during our Fun Fridays!
