Ms. Skinner’s Fifth Grade News

Happy Friday all and welcome to another edition of Fifth Grade News! Before we get into our recap, let’s go over some important dates:

October 13 – No School!

October 31 – Trunk or Treat at 1:45. Classroom party before 🙂

Now, what have we learned? Let’s go!

ELA: We worked on using correct ending marks and capitalization in our sentences, the sounds of wh and s in Phonics, and have worked on our next part of our Personal Narrative. We continue to have our vocabulary and spelling tests, and I am so impressed at their abilities! Next week, the students will hand in their final edit of their Personal Narratives. We will also focus on the differences between proper and common nouns.

Science: This week, we started our lesson on Properties of Matter and had stations where the students had to try to identify different materials like quartz, calcite, steel, aluminum, gold ore, and Pyrite. We learned that there are ways to test materials to identify properties that are unique to those materials. Our DIY lab this week is SLIME!

Religion: We will have a test on Tuesday on Lesson 2. Then, we will study a brief overview of the sacraments that we have in the Catholic faith.

Math: Students have been working very hard on their multiplication fluency skills! Word problems will continue to pop up in our work, tests, and in daily life so we are working hard on mastering them. We will have a test on all of Module 1 next week with a couple of days of review first.

Reading: Projects for George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt are due next Wednesday! We will start our new novel, the Phantom Tollbooth next week!

Enjoy a few pictures from our Slime Lab! We had a BLAST!
