Ms. Skinner’s Fifth Grade News

Hi all! I hope everyone’s Easter Break was restful. I felt like I got a total reset! Before we get into what we’ve been learning in class, let’s go over important dates:

April 21 – No Waste Lunch! Try using glass containers, reusable bags, silverware, and cloth napkins to reduce the waste going into landfills.

April 22 – Field Trip to the Field Museum! Please back a disposable lunch (okay we just did no waste lunch I realize the 180 here), and send your child to school in uniform.

April 23 – D4D Corner Bakery in La Grange (9am – 7pm)

April 23 – $1 Dress Down Day for Misericordia. No color theme!

Let’s get into the academics!

ELA: The students finished their Research Papers before Spring Break, and I will hand them back on Monday. I will allow them to make any grammatical corrections for 1/2 of the points back. Spelling Tests continue, and test corrections are always allowed on these. Please check your child’s test and encourage them to improve those grades! We will continue to have grammar lessons, and we are working hard on fixing run-on sentences and comma splices. We will have an assessment on run-on sentences next week.

Science: We are learning about the Earth’s orbit and rotation, and had a fun activity planned but this weather has decided that the lab can wait. Let’s pray that the sun comes out next week! Our next focus will be ENERGY!

Math: The next topic of focus – decimals! We are recalling lessons learned from the powers of 10 and place value to help us understand how to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100, and 1000. Next up, we will work on writing decimals as fractions and rounding.

Religion: Our next sacrament is the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Our test on this lesson will be next week, after we have a review day. Next up, we will turn out focus on the topics covered in the Archdiocese Religion Assessment that we will take very soon. We will also begin Growing with God; I will send out more information next week.

Reading: Today, we took our first quiz on Hatchet, a book about a young boy who survives a plane crash only to be lost in the Canadian wilderness. We are loving it so far. It’s suspenseful, it’s gross, it’s entertaining, and we are only through chapter four! Every week, we will have a quiz on the chapters we have read during the week. Reading logs are still due weekly and are worth 5 points. Your child should read every night for at least 20 minutes. I will allow audiobooks as well.

Social Studies: To see what’s happening in this subject, head on over to Ms. Pretzie’s page!
