Ms. Skinner’s Fifth Grade News

Happy New Year!! While it’s hard to believe that the school year is already halfway through, I look back on what this class has accomplished and how much they’ve grown in their skills (and in height.. I literally have to look up to some of them). But, we still have so much to do! Before we get into what’s happening in our room, let’s discuss upcoming dates and important reminders.

January 19th – No School – Martin Luther King Jr Day!

January 25th – Family Mass at 10:30am. Open House is from 11:30am – 2:30pm.

January 26th-30th – Catholic Schools Week!

January 30th – Red and White Games. Times of games will be sent out. We are on the White Team.

Now, what have we learned so far:

ELA: As always, we are working on expanding our vocabulary with our weekly words and our word of the day! I am impressed when I hear a vocabulary word used in conversations or class discussions. We are also working on writing an Opinion paper. I am thoroughly enjoying the topics so far, especially papers on topics that are new to me. Will I change my opinion on the best show? The best pet? The best comfort food? I will let you know.

Science: Everyone is doing an excellent job on their Consumer Fair Projects and so far, word in the hallways is that the students are enjoying this project too. Testing officially concludes today and we will work on polishing our data analysis and conclusions. Posters are due on January 22nd so that we can display them for Open House. Come by and see them on January 25th! Next, we will learn about food webs.

Math: FRACTIONS! The students are working very hard on mastering adding and subtracting fractions, finding common denominators, and simplifying. As always, I offer extra help to those who need it in class and during lunch. If you see your child struggling, please reach out to me or encourage your child to come to extra math help.

Religion: We are on the Sacrament on Confirmation and will have a test next week on it. Next up, we will do a deeper dive into Confirmation and then on to the Eucharist.

Reading: We have started our first novel of 2026, Number the Stars. I choose this book in January to align with Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th. While the topics discussed and explored in this book can be sad, they were very real, even if our characters were not. If your child starts asking about World War II, or any related topics it is because we have touched upon it in class. I think it’s very important to keep this part of history alive so that it may never be repeated. If you would like to find child-friendly resources, please ask for some. I have plenty! Aside from the heavy topics, it is a very beautiful book about friendship, strength, and bravery.

i-Ready: We will continue our diagnostic next week. Please make sure your child has a good night’s sleep and has breakfast in the morning. Please also encourage your child to not rush, but also to not get so frustrated on problems. The test will give them harder problems to assess their abilities, and readjust as needed.

Now, please enjoy some pictures from the Consumer Fair this week!
