This week, we finished talking about what is a disciple and listed ways that we can all be a disciple of Jesus. We distinguished between Apostles and disciples. In addition, we talked about the wonderful story of Pentecost. Next week, we will finish talking about Pentecost by creating a stained-glass window (using paper) of the Holy Spirit. Then, we begin to look at the Seven Sacraments.
In Math, we continue to work with numbers through 1,000. We are looking at many ways to represent a number and will compare numbers. We also work with our Simple Solutions workbook on most days. This gives the children an opportunity to practice many math skills on an almost daily basis. Remember, practicing basic addition and subtraction facts is part of daily homework! We will finish chapter 2 in the next two weeks. Then in Chapter 3, we will move on to basic facts and number relations.
We will finish our second unit in science next week, with the test on Friday. The unit will be sent home once finished so that your child has a few days to study. We will also be doing a lot of reviewing in class. Your child should study a little bit a day. If they are comfortable in answering the lesson review pages, they should do fine on the test. Next week, we may also use the design process for a STEM activity. After the test, we will switch gears over to Social Studies. The first unit focuses on Communities.
Within Language Arts, we have done so much these last two weeks. We have learned about pronouns, possessive nouns and pronouns, as well as homonyms. We’ve practiced writing some contractions and a few onomatopoeias. We learned a fun way to practice spelling by creating ghost words. We’ve also practiced reading fluently by reading whole group, small group and on our own. We’ve written our letters to a family member/friend and addressed a practice “envelope” so that we can simply transfer it over to the real envelope. We’ve read informational texts that helped us learn about captions, as well as sequencing.
- D4D is on Tuesday, October 3, at Chipotle on LaGrange Road in Countryside. This great option for dinner will take place from 4 – 8 PM. What a fun way to help our school!
- School Picture Day is on Thursday, October 5. Your child may dress up for pictures. However, keep in mind that our class does have PE that day. So, they should wear something that is comfortable to run around in AND wear gym shoes. If you prefer that your child change completely for PE, please have them come dressed for pictures, with gym clothes and shoes in a bag. They will have the chance to change prior to going to PE.
- We are going to have two wonderful special assemblies next week. The first is from Land of Smiles, where we will talk about the importance of dental care. The second assembly is a visit from Ellie the elephant, who will help students understand why it is important to be kind to friends and animals.
- There is no school on Monday, October 9.
