1st Grade Learning and so much FUN!

Hi there my wonderful families!,

Math: Math homework is being checked every single morning. Each day when homework is assigned, it will be coming from that Into Math homework/practice book! The next day, I will be checking their work! Please ensure that your child is completing their work:) There is no math homework for this weekend because we are introducing the next new unit.  To be prepared, the only other math homework that will be given will be a math worksheet to help the students prepare for their Math Unit Test. The night before the test, they will get that said worksheet. Hope this helps! 🙂

Wilson: We have been hard at work with our Wilson program. We have finished up with our Unit 3 test, and we will be starting Unit 4 this coming week. Being sent home this coming week, is their new trick words and some extra helpful materials/resources.

Spelling: These tests will be given every Friday. New lists will be sent home each week.

I sent home new lists today with your child! (Just in case they were lost, always better to be prepared!) This coming week’s words are:

Tells, Ships, chins, quits, walls.

Sentences:

1.) Who said the kids had chips and dip?

2.) Where are your tan socks?

Please practice saying and spelling the words. Focusing on uppercase and lowercase letters! Please focus on the sentences as well! 🙂  Please keep ensuring your child is studying the words and writing them out as it is a written test!

Social Studies: This week, we discussed the rules and the laws that we have within a community, and why they are important. We also explored what a government is, what it does, and why it is important! We also were able to explore the maps that we have in the classroom! This coming week we will be looking into different cultures and the similarities and differences we share!

Religion: In religion, we have been hard at work talking about God’s love and how important it is! We just starting talking about the Commandments and how we should be finally them——every single day of our lives!!

Science: We have been discussing every single day during morning meeting, the weather! With the seasons changing, we talk about what it looks like and feels like outside!

Reading: We have been reading different types of books talking through emotions and what happens through the book in our own words! We also have been talking about informational texts versus fictional! We are very grateful to have Storytime with our volunteering librarian (Mrs. Flood) on Thursday’s as well! This week, we will be using our tools of compare and contrast to follow along the adventures and experiences of characters in such stories! We also have been talking more and more about Thanksgiving and the importance of it! I cannot wait to see how your child has disguised their Turkey from being eaten on Thanksgiving Day!!! 🙂

Our first Mystery Guest Reader was today! It was my friends sister who played softball all of her life! The kids seemed to really like Miss Lauren! Our first Star Student of the week was Daniela, and this coming weeks is Santino! Once again, if you are interested in being a Mystery Guest Reader, please just let me know! 🙂

And as always, I am so grateful to have your child in my 1st grade classroom with me! 🙂

Thank you so very much for all you do,

Miss M. 🙂

God Is Present In My Life: Student Art and Essay Contest…With a Pope Leo Twist!

This summer, in a video message addressed to young people, Pope Leo invited us to, “Look into your own hearts, to recognize that God is present and that, perhaps in many different ways, God is reaching out to you, calling you, inviting you to know his Son Jesus Christ… to discover how important it is for each one of us to pay attention to the presence of God in our own hearts.”

Inspired by his words, elementary students at all Catholic schools are invited to share how they see and feel God’s presence through art or written expression. Pope Leo, who himself attended a Chicago Catholic school, reminded young people to look into their hearts and discover God’s presence. This contest is your chance to do the same.

Two entries per grade at each school will be accepted with winners in each vicariate. Deadline for submissions is Fri. December 5, 2025Click here for a contest flier with more details. Please direct any questions to ocscatholicidentity@archchicago.org.
